January 21, 2023 - A few wines for Chinese New Year (Chicago, IL): #25-72. I was mentally already prepared to dump this because of my TCA hit rate on bottles of old Prüm. The cork had a good 3-4mm of mold growing on the top (making it look like that the cork had been pushed out of the bottle a bit). And when I pulled the cork, this stank of TCA to high heaven. But somehow, the wine itself was not corked at all -- in fact, I initially cautioned that we should drain the bottle sooner than later in case the TCA did bloom, but here we are a few hours later, and I'm savouring the last pour of the bottle. When these old bottles of Prüm are on, they sure are on. This just got better with air. Initially there was definitely some bottle funk but the few hours this has been opened has allowed the off notes to dissipate, leaving you with a pristine, tertiary expression of riesling. Petrol notes dominate on the nose, but there's some of those classic creamy blue cheese Wehlener Sonnenuhr aromatics too (just not off-putting the way blue cheese is). On the palate, this has notes of dried stone fruit but relatively little botrytis especially in comparison to that other great vintage of the decade, 1976. This is much more elegant, lithe, and lean, and the acidic cut, balancing the sugary sweetness of dried apricots makes for a stellar combination.

August 28, 2021 - Brilliant wine - deep golden color and still much alive. Good acidity and great length - plums, caramel - superb!

February 18, 2017 - Rieslingfeier 2017; 2/17/2017-2/18/2017 (NYC): Drank at Rieslingfeier dinner - had some funk that needed time to diffuse on the nose. palate was unaffected and showed lovely dried tropical fruits and mineral.

February 21, 2014 - (Rieslingfeier 2014) I have no words. Head-shaking beauty. Perfectly balanced between the sugars and acidity. This wine clearly aged on its balance and not on any specific element. Clean as a whistle, just light golden color. Hard to imagine this sat in bottle for over 40 years. Really, just wow. Prum always surprises me by showing even better than the last mesmerizing bottle I had.

February 21, 2014 - Rieslingfeier 2014 - BYOB Main event (Rouge Tomate, NYC): Absolutely incredible wine. The palate is a real fireworks display - incredibly complex with layers of fresh fruit, baked apples, honey, bright florality and more savoury mature elements, all coming together seamlessly and conveyed with such purity and elegance. There's still a little lingering sweetness, and powerful acidity beneath that keeps it really light on its feet with a finish that resonates long after each sip. Wow.

Rockss and Fruit

(JJ Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese) this was astonishing wine. Perfection in a bottle. Ethereal and graceful with perfectly mature Mosel character. The complexity was mindboggling. The harmony and balance were something to behold. Caramel, slate, baked apples and a garden in full bloom on the nose. The palate easily was the best on any old Mosel wine I have ever had. It was light as a feather but had great sap and intensity. This was almost totally dry too at this point in its evolution. Like spider silk on the palate. I don't break out the spider silk often but this was an apt descriptor for this wine. A great wine and a new benchmark for me when it comes to mature Mosel Riesling.
