June 24, 2021 - Beautiful “old school” Bordeaux style, showing very well. Excellent fruit still on this, with all the cedar and cigar notes you’d expect. This was a treat on a Wednesday night from an impromptu visit by a neighbor.

June 5, 2021 - Surprised to the upside. I've grown fond of Gruaud Larose thanks to wine buddies sharing assorted vintages over the last 10yrs. '01 BDX has been a mixed bag for me but this one delivered everything I wanted from classic St Julien. Semi opaque ruby garnet red. Generous aromas of cigar box and cedar complement a charming elegant & resolved palate w/ dark fruit, cedar, mineral, licorice & chocolate. Most of all, that less weighty St Julien elegance. Opened 3hrs before dinner & slow-oxed in Riedel BDX & the btl. Cork a bit dry buy fill high & wine in great shape. Quite satisfying and happy to own one more. Both sourced from same retailer in a cellar sell off Aug 2019. Ill wait at least 3yrs on my last. Resolved w/ air. No rush to drink.

March 31, 2021 - Drinking nicely now. Not particularly memorable, improved after a few hours to reveal more nuance which suggests no rush to drink.

March 28, 2021 - As with the last two bottles, this has plateaued nicely, who knows how long it would've lasted, but alas, this was my last bottle. It looks alarmingly dark, and you expect it to be OTT, but if you close your eyes, it really does present as a Bordeaux of yore, all cedar, graphite, cassis. Tannins still there, this will likely stay on plateau and possibly improve for another five years for sure, maybe even 10-20. This was excellent. 92

Rockss and Fruit

(Gruaud-Larose) Ehhh...maybe one of the most boring wines on the left bank? Well maybe GPL and Lynch-Bages could nudge it out but your mileage may vary. I have liked GL in the past but it really underwhelms me these days. This was out of half bottle and had a nice floral nose with a ton of spicey oak and some mineral. Palette was rich and creamy with lots of unfocused red fruits and major barrel flavors. It later became shrill as the acid became the dominant force. It was correct wine but just so boring. I find certain left bank estates like GL, LB, GPL to be a bore. I don't know why. It's just there is no excitement in the wines. Everything is predictable and these wines and wines of the same ilk are just good, plain old fashioned Bored-deaux.

(Gruaud Larose) Nose of tarry oak, asian spice, earth and slight cassis. Nice nose. Great concentration of red fruits with a hint of vanilla from the oak. Good acids and around a 15 second finish. Very open. Excellent Gruaud for drinking now and for maybe 10-12 more years.
