April 11, 2023 - Dinner at Montanello with Luca

    Brought directly from Vietti

Balsam, dried rose hips, and savory ferrous notes on the nose. Midweighted with a savory and soil more than fruit driven plate, with some chocolate like blurring of the fruit that I suspect is from the elevage regimen at the time. Moderately long finish. Drinking well with time in hand (at least for this effectively perfect provenance bottle). A very good '98.

February 18, 2023 - Dumb on the nose and lacking fruit, this bottle was a big disappointment as were both Vietti wines on the night including the 2000 Ravera.

April 16, 2017 - Purchased direct from winery in 2002

Color: dark red with brown edge
Nose: light to medium intensity; rich complex with leather notes; some sherry aroma

Body/flavor: medium to full body; very layered structure; tobacco and leather.
    Aftertaste: short finish

Both aroma and flavor spiked quickly and then dissipated rapidly; wine was maderized, but still enjoyed while it lasted.

March 29, 2015 - Amazing how different the experience is for everyone. This wine is definitely beginning to run for the roses and reaching its peak yet should have many many years left. Smooth, elegant, velvet texture. Light color but nice strong structured legs on the glass. Nose evolved over 4 hours into a well balanced aromatic nose with dark chocolate, meat, leather and some 'nail polish' which wasn't as off putting as expected. Integrated tannins yet the structure remains for aging. Less acidity than some other young Barolo's I've had. In all this wine would be worthy of my hunting down more since it was a one off for me. Sorry notes are limited. We were at dinner with friends and these thoughts are from memory. For those of you who know me family, friendship, food & wine in that order so the focus was on our conversation and the food and we let the wine bring it all together.

November 9, 2013 - A tricky wine as it did not seem to have the depth when first poured, slightly astringent. Yet, with a succulence that grew in the glass and with time to reveal a beautiful wine.
