November 12, 2023 - Solid mountain Napa cab.
Beautiful deep ruby color with a nose full of violets and cassis, peppery spice, forest floor, cedar wood, with a nice long finish ending with a lingering note of flowers and dark berries.
It’s drinking perfectly now. Guess my prediction that it would last worked out just fine. Lol.
July 24, 2023 - Still going strong but at it’s peak. Drink up!
January 1, 2023 - Wow, who would believe that a $40 bottle of wine would hang together this well over 15 years plus. Yes, it’s very mature, but as a pop and pour, it’s fantastic still had the body to hold up very well to a wagyu & venison burger.
May 28, 2022 - Glass; Opaque rubi with some copper in the borders.
Nose dark fruit jam, plum, vanilla , nutmegMouth; tanins still present but polished, med- full mouth feel
Nice balance, aftertaste
Good for another 5 years.
March 25, 2022 - Nice but not exceptional. Cedar very prominent on nose.
January 29, 2020 - Mini Wednesday Wine Lunch (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Very dark red/purple color with a lighter 4-5mm meniscus. PNP, drank a glass over an hour and a bit leftover 2 days later. There's a little bit of green herbs on the nose and palate, dark sweet fruits, creme de cassis and blackberries, fairly ripe but not too overt, pepper and tobacco leaf. Thepalate is dense and full bodied, blackberries and sour cherry, tobacco, a little of that green herb note here too. None of the green herbs show up a couple days later. The tannins and round and pleasant with even more mineral density too, more to the gravel side. Quite good still, safe for a couple years, though probably on the top of the downslope now. 91+ to 92pts.
December 27, 2017 - Well made, nicely balanced Cabernet with many years ahead of it. Red and black fruits, creme de cassis, leather and lead pencil. Everything falls into place but nothing makes you sit up and say wow. Perhaps age will deliver some surprises!
December 3, 2017 - drinking beautifully right now, terrific wine
August 28, 2016 - Solid ripe Napa Valley Cabernet with a very nice level of development but a generous hint of Brett in the background. Absolutely at or just slightly past its peak, further aging will bring up the Brett as the fruit fades. As it was a nice wine with some rare lamb.
April 15, 2016 - Decanted 1hr, loads of sediment as expected, Bordeaux nose of cedar, cigar box, earth, truffles. The palate is full of left bank flavors, balanced currants, cassis, graphite, cedar, coffee, earth, not unlike that of a fine 3 or 4th growth from the same vintage, fine balance and complex as well. This Newton is drinking well now but can last for several more years in a cool, consistent environment.
