November 15, 2023 - Initially, the nose was off-putting, but after a few minutes that passed allowing all the tobacco, burnt wood, smoke, tar, leather, cigar box, tobacco leaf, and dried red berries to show their stuff. Chewy, slightly rustic, and loaded with charm, the finish was all about its tobacco-infused, cherry and cranberry endnote. Drink from 2023-2028.

September 25, 2021 - Not a perfect bottle, showing a little dense overall. Lacking the finesse of fresher examples. Still, a lovely wine.

July 15, 2021 - Good fill level. This was a very special, impressive wine with a killer nose (easily deserving 98-99 points). The palate missed a bit of density and poise but overall this was still truly enjoyable and provided a lot of intellectual pleasure. 94 to 95 points.

TN: Super intense nose, hyper complex with lots of meaty, bacon fat, beef jerky, ash aromas around a still intact dark ripe fruit core which is in the background. Impossible to stop smelling this wine. New nuances pop up all the time with sage, cedar and mineral notes. On the palate it can‘t fully hold the promises of the nose. While the attack is similar impressive, the wine fades away mid palate and is missing a bit of creaminess and fruit. Anyway, truly impressive.

Decanting: Not decanted, no decanting necessary. Good right from the go.

July 2, 2021 - Magnum rarities tasting; 7/2/2021-7/3/2021 (Zunfthaus zur Waag, Zurich): Magnum rarities tasting hosted by a merchant and collector. The headline line-up of the main event featured 18 aged red wines from magnum which was preceded by warm-up tasting of a dozen aged reds. The highlights across both days were Chris Ringland 1998 (99), Montrose 1990 and Yquem 1948 (both 98). Also strong were Palmer 1989 (97), Cheval Blanc 1985 (97) and Léoville Poyferré 1990 (96). None of the wines were decanted prior to serving.

    Tasting note:
Lots of meaty notes surrounding a sweet red berry fruit core, aging notes of sous-bois, black tea, dried herbs and mineral notes of coal. Lots of precision here. Soft texture, just marginally thin with a bit too much acidity. Otherwise great aroma intensity. The nose easily scores 95+, but palate – probably unsurprisingly – is showing signs of fatigue. Overall a great LMHB that easily beat the 1966 and 1971 we had in the same flight.

July 2, 2021 - Together with the Three Rivers 1998 this was my WOTN. Smoked bacon, ash, forest floor, but quite dense and compact (for a lack of other word) but still quite long
