December 30, 2019 - Time to check into this one again. Quite deeply coloured in the black raspberry range grading to garnet as it thins towards the edge. Merde, smoky mulberry, black currant leaf, light sandalwood, graphite and leather on the nose. Medium bodied, very smooth, well integrated acidity and a dry finish. The flavours are dark plum skin, black currant, suede and tree mulch. Still some powdery tannins on the finish that feels a bit dried out and somewhat astringent. Overall still quite tasty and surprisingly good for the vintage, although it is definitely starting to show its age.

October 12, 2019 - Delicious. Both of us were cooing and cawing, and I literally didn't want to finish the glass for fear of ending the party. Medium ruby with just slight hints of bricking - lovely nose, not effusive, but alluring, classic, detailed - Very Bordeaux, just right, delicate in this vintage, and finely appointed. The experts pooh pooh these "off" vintages, but although they may not be as grand analytically as the bigger years, I'm not convinced that they don't actually give more pure pleasure. We've had a lot of very pleasurable '02, '04 and '07 Bordeaux. This wine was impeccably balanced, complex and nuanced, just plain awesome. Got better as the evening progressed, I wasn't just nursing it, more like treasuring it.

October 21, 2018 - Very enjoyable after short decanting. Balanced fruit tannins structure, I liked it.

June 8, 2018 - Much lighter bodied than I expected. Rich and dark with restrained fruit, soft tannins and a medium finish. Earthy and musty on the nose

(Château Smith-Haut-Lafitte (Pessac-Léognan)) Dark and grainy oak here, bringing lightly charred and buttery sensations to the aromatics, but there is dark fruit behind, with a sweet and lightly perfumed red forest fruit character. The palate is rather soft and plump, the feel in the mouth welcoming, broad and fairly well filled out for the vintage. There is certainly some substance here, softly enveloping the tannins and acidity beneath. It is attractive, but in a very plush (within the context of the vintage) and toasty style. Good grip in the finish too. This at least has promise.

(Chateau Smith-Haut-Lafitte Pessac-Léognan) A dark style of fruit on the nose here, with a rather hot feel to it, with hints of baked stone, roasted-charred aromas, and an animally edge too. A supple palate, with more crunchy fruit than I expected and quite an attractive although gentle substance. A little length too. There is potential for development in this wine, but it is noticeably less successful than the white.

(Chateau Smith-Haut-Lafitte Pessac-Léognan) Rather burnt, charry oak character here, raw and hard. Firm on the palate, a nice substance, broad, nice flesh and quite persistent. A slightly bitter charcoaly finish. Plenty of character although there is a need for this wine to come together in a more harmonious fashion in barrel.
