July 27, 2019 - Cork crumbling but thanks to Durand a clean pull. Greeted by a slightly madereized nose at first the funk does blow off after ten minutes. The nose is not the most pleasurable thing about this wine, it is quite sour starting to lean borderline (!) into the vinaigre spectrum, some musk aromas. It does however get better and better with air and at one hour (not decanted) reaches equilibrium and this subsides into what could be a mature Burgundy with some murky Vosne spice, coffee bean. So certainly post prime. Visually quite healthy however, mature yes but fairly healthy brick colour. The palate safes the wine - high tone acidity resolves with a sweetish spicy gravely Burgundian (Vosne like) finish. At 41 years I am inclined to cut it some slack, lean back and listen to some classical music, and indulge it for the still commendable palate it offers, an improving performance as it carefully draws air. Surely this wines plateau was 10-20 years ago but it is still an enjoyable drink now. There is a lot there to like and one can only infer that this must have been a truly terrific wine then! I have one more and that will be opened in the next months. Drink up folks!

July 9, 2019 - Corked - bummer. Initial sip showed that this could have been a beautiful fully mature wine. Then the TCA took over mercilessly. Shame.

(Gaja Barbaresco) Stunning wine. Great nose of caramel, minerals, loam and earth. Very strong aromas. Massive palate with great concentration and richness. Amazing texture and concentration with beautiful purity. This just glides along the palate and just soaks. The Mouton of Piedmont. Amazing wine that just sticks to your palate and does not go away. Stunning!
