January 16, 2022 - Superb fully mature amarone. A decant of ~ 2 hours really improved the wine. Highly recommend. Drink or hold right now - under proper cellaring conditions this wine does have a few more years to go but probably no real further upside to cellaring. Definitely recommend. Dark ruby, well integrated, full bodied and smooth with a long aftertaste. Nose aromatic and intense with dark cherry, rose, raisin and tar. Profile of dark stone fruit, raisin, tar and mocha. Cork pristine.
December 11, 2021 - Upon first opening, the wine was a very good example of a fine Amarone. About half the bottle was Vacuvin'd and revisited four days later. The wine was so dramatically improved that I consider it to be the best Amarone that I have tasted to date. Unfortunately, my last bottle. The dramatic improvement augers well for future pleasure for anyone who is lucky enough to have some of this beauty.
November 27, 2021 - Clearly last peak, but still OK. A cheese wine IMHO, or maybe some dessert.
January 20, 2021 - Bottle from secondary market
-hot with a hollowed out mid-palate of oxidized mature notes and finish dominated by EtOH and caramel
-either an off bottle or over the hill, much more evolved than a '99 opened tonight
April 6, 2020 - Wow! 22 years old and still delicious. Thanks to those who suggested that it would still be drinkable.
May 11, 2019 - Well balanced, with good tannic grip, ripe fruit, and decent acidity, but starting to show its age.
February 4, 2019 - This 20 year old wine drank beautifully. It still possesses intense dark fruits, pepper, perfectly balanced tannic grip and no oxidation. I don't see how it can get any better at this age, so I suggest drinking it if you have it. I am looking forward to enjoying my last bottle later this year.
December 24, 2018 - Highly acidic and boring. This vintage has always underwhelmed me.
December 2, 2018 - Decanted, but did not stand up for sufficient amount of time. Last 1/16 of bottle was poured out with dark cloudy/inky sediment infused wine; wish I stood up the wine more. Aroma of alcoholic plum. At first the wine was a bit alcoholic, but over an hour it opened up and the alcohol was better masked. Paired well with a cheese board. Preferred this Allegrini over others I have had.
June 13, 2018 - PNP. Advanced age showing in color. With 30 minutes to warm and open this drank reasonably well. Feels fully mature and hard for me to say where it goes from here. Obviously a big wine and tough match for food but reasonable with a big steak or after dinner. Will try again tomorrow to see if any reason to upgrade. A+/A-
