  April 15, 2023 - I've heard this is the last wine HGS made at Catoir, and what a way to sign off. I said the Schaefer Eiswein was basically an extension/hyper-concentration of the Schaefer Himmelreich Kabinett - somehow this does the same for the 2001 Mandelring Scheurebe Spätlese, which is a feat given how intense and rich that wine already is. This keeps the same kaleidoscopic tropical complexity, but it's bigger, more tropical, even sweeter... and somehow impeccably balanced with piercing acidity and amazing freshness. I have absolutely no idea how a wine like this is even possible, but I'm glad for those HGS-era Catoirs (as my stash gradually nears its end.)

  April 15, 2023 - "I'm not having a glass of wine; I'm having six. It's called a tasting and it's classy." (Chicago, IL): #20-02, 10.5% abv, 2143. From half-bottle. Insane scheurebe profile, more grapefruit pith than mango or passionfruit, but no less tropical and wild. Distinct citrus notes here, with intensely bitter phenolics that serve to balance out the sweetness. Wonderful freshness despite the 22 years of age, this is another Catoir from the HGS era where everything was dialled up to 11 (seriously, all those wineries trying to make fruit bombs could learn a lot from what went on here in 2001), and yet stayed in improbably perfect balance.

  July 18, 2022 - "Jimmy Suckles; elbow deep": #20-02, 10.5% abv, 2143. From half-bottle. Inordinately fresh and youthful. An absolutely masterpiece of scheurebe, with a distinctly botrytised nose showing a stunning array of fruits -- a very clear apricot skin note, as well as a mix of assorted yellow and orange tropical flavours (along the lines of guava and mango). Tingling acidity on the nose already. The palate is clean, crisp, and precise in the way the best bottles of high Prädikat riesling are, where all the flavours merge as one but you can also pick out each individual element. A generous hit of botrytis might make you think this is a TBA, but that racy acidity on the back end is certainly far more Eiswein. A phenomenally exceptional showing of a very, very special wine.

  June 8, 2022 - As Lyle would say, "sick nose" of passion fruit and honey. Rock candy. Mango, guava - kaleidoscopic. Flowers and tangerine. Palate is nuts - super sweet and tropical. High acid. Delicious. Super honey. So fresh and lively and juicy - it's heartbreaking. Thanks Jay!

  April 24, 2019 - amazing bright grapefruit and passion fruit. Thick amazing perfume with bright tones. A bit thick and buzzy but that’s quipping. Great acid and Lift and perfume.
