April 1, 2022 - Festa del Piemonte: Gala Dinner (The Pool in NYC): Another wine that I think might have appreciated a bit of time in a decanter. This came across as much darker than the Cantina (Bartolo) Mascarello of the same year that we had alongside. Dark fruits and dried fruits and maybe a bit of madeira to it too although I think that might have blown off with a bit more time.

July 11, 2021 - Beautiful bottle of aged barolo. Ruby red. Fully mature. Touch of tannin remaining. Stable in the glass for hours after opening. Medium body of tar and leather but also some fruit. Not as great as the 71s and 78s but pretty delicious. Even wife liked it.

October 31, 2020 - Neck fill. Cork came up in one piece. Left open for around 6 hours. The lightest og most fragile of all my aged barolos coulorwise and similar to 1958 Orange rim. Completly and utterly sublime nose from the first second in the glas. Rosehip, dried fruits, some dried roses and violets. A smal medicial note and truffle / forest floor. Orange peel and nuts. Intense, crystal clear and all-consuming. Nice red dried fruits on the palate, sweet fruit core (much better fruit than the 58), nice acidity. Tannins resolved. Great length with mushrooms and truffle. An emotional wine and my best aged Barolo. Perfect condition. No rush but probably peaking

May 30, 2020 - Color is a very light, faint orange. On the nose, the aromatics are largely mature yet are pure and lifted, with dried red fruit, roses, star anise, earth, menthol, and a touch of toasted nuts. On the palate, the wine remains vibrant and intense, with plenty of sweet, dried red cherry fruit sweeping across the palate, transitioning into a long, powerful finish of dried red fruit, baking spices, and a nutty, caramel flavor that lingers on the tongue long after. The tannins are fully resolved and the texture of the wine is like silk, yet it retains a sense of power and vibrancy due to the mass of fruit and high acidity level.

If well stored it does not appear that this wine will be falling off a cliff anytime soon, but it appears to be perfectly at peak and it's hard to imagine it getting much better than this. This is my second experience with the wine from two different sources and the impression has been identical, of a concerningly light-colored wine of great power and purity. The '61 Mascarello Riserva is a great wine that borders on the profound.

December 5, 2016 - The nose was sweet and spicy with notes of raisin, dried-spicy citrus rind, and a note of sweet roasted pecan. It gained freshness with air, yet oxidation had taken hold, as this has already seen its best years. On the palate, it was soft and fleshy with notes of dried cherry, dried strawberry, leather and minerals. It finished long on soil tones and minerality.
