August 4, 2020 - For an old Gouges, it outperformed as the sweetness showed. Certainly drinking much younger than its age, but the wine was still slightly rustic and four-squared, very much inline with my impression of the domaine.

April 16, 2017 - A difficult wine to evaluate. Immediately after opening and decanting, a corked-like taint emerged. As it disappeared over the next two hours, it was clearly not cork taint but rather some dusty, firm and rustic tannins. I appreciate the tannins in the structure of the Gouges wines, but after 29 years when little else remains in the wine, you have to conclude that ultimately the wine was poorly balanced. There is not enough fruit or texture to stand up to the harsh tannins. This wine is not going to improve. Certainly still enjoyable with a lamb roast, which explains the decent score.

April 4, 2016 - Tannins have completey mellowed, but unfortunately the acids have largely receded. Abundant dried dark fruits. A dirtier, and not surprisingly less vibrant, wine than strong more recent vintages. Perhaps some slight bottle and storage conditions (although unclear what those would have been)

October 30, 2008 - Tasting of Italy by the DRC-club (Brugweg - Velp): Although I had a few bottles of this wine before and was quite positive about it, at a tasting it was served next to Musigny 1995 of Vogüé (from magnum). This made this wine nearly boring, dusty, tired. I'm sure this was caused by its pairing, because this is a good wine and completely ripe now. Drink soon.

May 19, 2006 - 1988 Nuits St.-Georges 1ers (Chicago, IL): Another 1988 that has emerged beautifully from its long-term cocoon. Dark color with intense blackberry and black cherry on the nose with some really good forest floor components as well. Still quite structured, the powerful fruit has lived long enough to match up to those tannins. Very long finish is both powerful from the fruit, but also fragrant and somewhat elegant. Posterchild for good les St. Georges with some age.
