February 19, 2023 - This bottle was in an interesting spot. These drank like liquefied smoked black fruits with a large dose of savory spices. The casks do a lot for this as the mocha, vanilla and cocoa powder further add to the darkness of the fruits.
Plenty of ripeness was present to keep this going - I personally enjoyed how the powerful elements jostled for position on my tongue. I can also see how someone who looks for a bit more structure and finesse in their syrahs disliking this wine.1 person found this helpful Comment -

July 4, 2021 - Well made but not my thing. A little hot and I personally didn’t find any complexity or interest.

March 19, 2021 - Popped and poured. Stewed blackberries, violets, fruitcake and herbs and spices. This is a big open knit hedonistic California style syrah which has concentrated somewhat overdone fruit components. The wine is still relatively youthful but don’t think it will evolve in interesting ways.

November 20, 2020 - Decanted one hour before approaching. A symphony of notes jumping out of the glass--woodsy, mushroom, vanilla, mocha, dark chocolate, bright cherries, pencil lead. Scrumptious before even taking a sip. Palate: round mouthfeel, big fruit, just gorgeous.

August 9, 2020 - Nearing the end of its life; the fruit is slightly fading and while it remains impressive in many aspects it lacks the depth and length it once had. However, it retains ferocity (black licorice, Nicaraguan tobacco, white pepper, and a variety of spices) and some big-fruit characteristics, i.e. very dark, juicy and fully ripened blackberry / boysenberry. Well-made Syrah from Napa Valley is typically powerful stuff, and this one must have been quite a little monster in its youth.
