November 22, 2021 - Mushrooms, dust, earth tobacco, old books, old leather. Some dried blackberries and black cherries. The fruit is mostly gone; but a lot has risen in its place.

I think the "dust" is my favorite part of this - without many primary notes, it takes center stage. You always hear about "Rutherford dust", etc. when studying Napa Cabs, but in younger wines it's usually more of a background note.

The structure here is evident. Soft tannins are just barely hanging on. If you like tertiary flavors, this is great right now.

Paired with a ribeye and green beans.

August 1, 2018 - Served blind and said smelled like 1994 Araujo from last week, which made sense. Smells amazing, sweet and floral. Light palate, retains acidity.

March 30, 2018 - Some Wine Before/During/After a Seder (The Krengels - Bannockburn IL): Bottle had been previously Coravin'ed multiple times and almost half consumed before opening tonight. Wonderful aromas of mint, fully mature black fruit and woodsy spice with forest floor. Less exciting flavors seemed more tired and almost murky, but still tasty.

July 16, 2017 - Classic tobacco, leather, dried red and black fruits. No sweetness on the nose (in contrast to a 97 Montelena and 04 DCV Gravelly Meadow) but still surprisingly youthful. A bit of grip still. Very enjoyable.
