December 25, 2023 - Condado de Haza Ribera del Duero Alenza Gran Reserva, Dunkelrot mit Ziegelroten Reflexen schimmernd; Reife, bezaubernde Tannine, samtig, Pflaume, Teer, Leder, köstlich süsse Frucht mit etwas Zimt am Gaumen. Lecker zu einer schönen Zigarre. Wunderbar zu trinken, gleitet auf dem Höhepunkt. 94 +Punkte.

May 17, 2016 - A fabulous wine. Deep red with some bricking around the edges. The nose showed plenty of fruit mixed with some earthy dusty attic, cedar and horse stable. The profile was forceful and fresh with a rising complex mixture of red fruits and all the above notes mixed in. The integration, balance and length were so impressive...

August 27, 2014 - What a shame. Evidence of poor handling at some point...possibly at the winery. Smelled of nail varnish and Aqua Net. Possibly some secondary fermentation too. What a crying shame.

March 23, 2014 - Another Alenza, another soft, seeping cork. Beef broth, stewed plums, damp campfire, musty old oak, leather, earth, brown sugar, damp tobacco leaves. Lightly oxidized, some tannin and good acidity remain but this wine seems fading and sick. Oh well.

Alejandro states "Alenza is the greatest wine I've ever made" but I don't see how these compete with Pesquera Reservas of any vintage...

August 27, 2012 - Head to head challenge: ’95 Haza, Alenza Reserva (86 pts) vs. ’94 Arroyo, Val Sotillo Reserva (89 pts). I love and respect a good aged tempranillo, but this seems like it may have maybe peaked out some time ago. Everything has worked itself out, but there’s just not much left. Still has good acidic balance, but has significantly less concentration on the nose than the Val Sotillo. Definite signs of deterioration; signs of thinning out and falling apart. Compared to the ’96 Alenza (92 pts) that I had 9 months ago, the ’95 seems at least 5 years older. $100 release price, I paid $40, and even that seems a little high. $25 or $30 is about where this should be right now before it turns to water in 2014.
