Community Tasting Notes 2

January 8, 2016 - Took a bottle to Contra for my bday. When opened this was good, but not great, it seemed like a high-quality mature riesling: aromas of apples, baked apple with a bit of lime, some honey, spices, a bit of caramel, and some minerality. The palate was similar: smooth and polished, but lacking some energy. It would soundly be in the 16-16.5/20 range.

HOWEVER, with about an hour+ in the glass, this wine started to expand and ignite. The fruit in the nose developed a multilayer aspect, with the rounder red apple and baked apple at the bottom and the crisp lime, tangerine on the top, and tropical notes (Keshet said: 'all the fruits we had in Belize') of pineapple and banana bridging the two. There is nice stones and flint, along with honeysuckle, white flowers and nectar. The spice has mostly receded. There isn't the full musky melon that I often get from these wines, but there is an herbal aspect - verbena and minty that sometimes verges on musky. This nose has a breadth and complexity that is simply breathtaking. The palate and the finish sharpened up, with the structure and acid starting to show. The palate starts with the softer apple and honey, but the lime, citrus, tropical and minerals, come in quickly and the acid backbone is really lively. The herbal The finish some of the roundness, but lots of lime and citric zing and minerality. I got this note on the palate/finish from just a sip or two in the glass that had been breathing for over an hour - when poured again, the wine was more closed and I never was able to give it the time to open again. But that taste was enough. Nose - 6/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5-5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 2/2 = 18.5-19/20.

October 13, 2012 - July 18, 2012 at the Romain Reunion, Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Put out on the table with many other wines from Ron's and my cellars, and cheerfully guzzled by folks who kept coming back for more. 'This is terrific; what is it? Is there any more left?' Crowd reaction compared favorably with the Schaefer Domprobst 2005 Auction Wine. This is the second time I've gone down to the Reunion, finding far more perceptibility concerning wine quality (after all, I share the genes of these folks) than I expected. At least 93/100, but it would deserve at some time a quieter and more thorough assessment by yours truly.
