September 20, 2020 - P&P. Great aromas, nice acidity. Blueberries, leather notes. In a great spot now. Improved during the evening so maybe a small decant will help.

August 29, 2020 - Right out of the bottle, this wine was singing. Gorgeous, almost explosive nose of cooked mushrooms, ripe cherries, wet soil, sous-bois. Just beautiful. Most of the nose carried over to the palate, with red currents joining the mix. What a lovely wine. Ended up decanting about 45 minutes, but didn't really need it - no change to the nose, palate smoothed out just a bit.

I recall having a bottle of this perhaps a year or two ago, and another a year or two prior to that, which both showed well, but not at this level. For me, I would say this particular bottle was at peak...somewhat surprising as I've had other 2000s that seem to need another decade or more to reach anything resembling this level of maturity. Certainly a wine to look for.

August 26, 2020 - Last tasted 18 months ago, this is moving forward at a glacial pace and really needs a good few hours of aeration, and time in the glass to really come alive. That said, once open it is starting to drink well. Its previously muted nose has now blossomed and is rich with cherry, strawberry, cedar and tobacco. With time in the glass, it is starting to show a maturity on the palate and is complex with great depth and a 30+ seconds finish. It is still a little green and this youthfulness is particularly noticeable towards the end of the finish. I concur that this is probably the best Lagrange drinking at present, but I think this needs another 3 to 5 years to start hitting its peak drinking window.

August 22, 2020 - Cork was in good condition for a 20 year old wine, hardly any saturation. Some sediment. Deep purple. Classic cigar box aroma. Soft velvety tannins. Beautifully harmonious balance. A great example of the charms of mature Bordeaux.

Rockss and Fruit

(Lagrange) Stunning nose of cocoa, leather, mint, bbq sauce, menthol, asian spice. Very aromatically precise. Almost like a solid in the mouth. Great density and weight but still retains elegance. It was amazing how big how many of the 2000's were but what was more amazing was how much elegance they had. They all punched you in the face, but you saw it coming in very slow motion. Remarkable - - this vintage.

(Chateau Lagrange St Julien) Fat and rich on the nose, with dense black cherry fruit and oak, with a burnt, toasty edge - perhaps even a touch of roasting to the flavour profile. The palate is unsurprisingly still packed with tannin and very backward at this stage it its development. Nevertheless there is a hint of fat, rich opulence here and buttery fruit. Destined for excellence. Needs a decade in the cellar.

(Château Lagrange (St. Julien)) Meaty nose; very concentrated, rich, tasty, cassis, plum palate; medium-plus finish
