November 18, 2023 - Showed a bit volatile and funky, particularly compared to the 01 Rupestris and 01 Franco in the same flight. Plenty of stuffing and potential. Likely some bottle variation in this vintage.

November 18, 2023 - Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume VIII (Chicago, IL): Not a super great showing of this wine -- there was a slight hint of volatility there, as I guess happens with Cappellano now and again. Red fruited and delicate, but missing the structure and the well-put-togetherness of the 2001 alongside. Still I quite enjoyed the texture of this, and hope that this was just a slightly off bottle, though I haven't been as confident about my original feelings on 2004 over the last year or two and have become slightly bearish on it based on a few that I've drank over that time period.

March 12, 2022 - Double decanted at noon. Taking a look at one since the bottles are all base neck fill, as they were from the start, but at some point one has to consider what the low fills might do to the value of the bottles. If the wines weren't so good that would be a serious consideration.

    First taste 5pm

Nose is greeted by a waft of volatility which settles down quickly revealing a bright set of aromatics, juicy cherry fruit, tar, some underlying minty vegetal notes and dried rose petal. Good intensity, chalky freshness, though there is a hint of caramelization. Medium bodied, bright, edgy in the mouth, very youthfully taut. Tannins are firm and dry if not overpowering, but very present, the backend is explosive with soil, cherry, minth, slight notes of torrefaction, and an underlying darker fruit tone, black cherry verging on blackberry. Very austere at this stage, but harmonious, if decidedly youthful. It is decidedly minty and somewhat medicinal in the mouth, but very fine at this stage with great upside potential. It absolutely begs for food at this stage. I would suggest another 5 years in the cellar before trying this again It is very long on the palate already, with terrific persistence.

Air brings out some lovely tobacco accents on the nose and the tannins begin to soften, though this remains tense. The fruit on the long finish gains a candied red accent as well. So much minerality on the long finish. Just stunning potential.

November 13, 2021 - White Truffles & Nebbiolo - 2021 Edition (Chicago, IL): If this was the only wine of the four in my cellar, I’d be perfectly happy. On the young side of its drinking window. A ton of concentrated tarry cherry with plenty of spice and herbal accents. Tannins are still firm but well integrated with fruit. Harmonious.

November 13, 2021 - Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume VI (Chicago, IL): This didn't change very much from the pop and pour to service about 8 hours later. Very juicy and surprisingly more black-fruited than I would have expected for a 2004, with a somewhat silky tannic structure that feels like it's on the cusp of resolution. A little more volatility/balsamic on the nose than I really would like. I'll comment (perhaps for the last time) that I had read plenty about the inconsistency of this wine, but haven't noticed that myself at all.
