June 24, 2019 - Feels like this is drinking at or near peak. Lovely blackberry notes, with some tar, some cedar; flowers on the nose. Very, very smooth - not a hard edge to be found. I left a little for the second night, but it went down hill. But on first night this was fabulous.

December 8, 2017 - Out of 3.0L. Good richness and concentration of savory black fruit. Dense but balanced with lightly fresh acidity. Lots of violets and white pepper notes throughout.

February 12, 2016 - 13.5% alcohol. Savory, structured, gripping, and moderately proportioned with notions of blackberry, blueberry, spices, creosote, and purple flowers. Similar showing - if a bit more expressive - as with the previous bottle.

December 29, 2015 - This wine had the nose of a 2005-07 Copain Syrah opened young, wafting creamy blackberry and reduced bullion, combined with a well balanced savory/earthy red berry palate showing all the benefits of maturity. A fabulous food wine with duck cassoulet (and probably anything), as well as the sort of bottle that validates the expense of long term storage.

(Copain Syrah Spirit Rock Alder Springs Vineyard) Opaque purple red violet color; aromatic, plush, roasted plum, berry nose; tasty, tight, tart plum, green herb, tar berry, tar palate; medium-plus finish 92+ points

(Copain Syrah Spirit Rock Alder Springs Vineyard) Barrel samples
A - 100% whole cluster; clone 174, 161 – more subtle roasted meat and berry nose; delicious berry, roasted fruit with herbs, should be elegant and wonderful 94-98 pts.
B- A sample from another barrel that was grown on 429A rootstock, and it was slightly fruitier, showing more berry.
C- A third barrel was from clone 525 on SQ rootstock - and it had a more savory, smoke nose, with a great, rich, pepper and smoke palate. Still 94-98 pts., and what incredible elements for a very complex ultimate blend.
