June 19, 2019 - This was a very good aged Chateauneuf. The nose was lovely with dark fruits, tar, spice, herbs, some damp earth and dried floral notes. The palate shows very good balance and depth and this particular bottle which had a very good cork seal would easily drink well for another 5-10 years. Paired very nicely with smoked brisket.

June 8, 2019 - Decanted about 1 hour and consumed over the following 2 hours. Bright purple-red color with a hint of brown at the rim. Very dense, rich nose of moss, cherries, tar, tobacco, and red earth but none of the garrique I would normally expect from this wine. Utterly seamless on the palate with all tannins fully resolved and a nice balancing acidity to bolster plenty of fruit. Long finish with a distinct tobacco note. This isn't a blockbuster Beaucastel but it may be the most elegant one I've ever had.

February 25, 2019 - Very leathery and mature on the nose, a little spice, not a lot of fruit; similar character on the palate. Quite lightweight, pleasant, but not worth paying a premium for.

February 23, 2019 - Dark red color with limited transparency. Aromas of smoke, spice, and cherry cough drop. Palate has earthy elements under a blackberry and cherry fruit profile that has some lavender and licorice notes. Finish here is medium. Tannins fully integrated. An everything in its place wine at this point, but not a wow Beaucastel moment for me with this bottle. Drink or hold.

February 20, 2019 - A very cool, upright Beaucastel. Light red-fruited, notes of white pepper and lavender, light and elegant - Burgundian indeed. This is delicious, lovely to drink but again, it doesn’t compare to the wines made chez Beaucastel pre 1995.

(Chateau de Beaucastel Châteauneuf du Pape) More than two years now since I last tasted this wine, and this is still a very good and youthful hue, cherry red with a fading rim, testament I would think to the large proportion of Mourvèdre the Perrins use in their blend. A lovely, savage, meaty, bright but chewy cherry character. There is meat stock and roast beef, with a touch of balsamic and liquorice, slight high-toned but nothing remotely acetic or volatile. Nice cool entry, but with immediately apparent creamy texture and lots of tangible substance. Very broad, good acid at the core, lots of density, some good grip provided by ripe and substantial tannins at the end. This vintage of Beaucastel has surprised me before; a 'fresher' vintage, this is remarkable meaty and dense, with great length. This has decades ahead of it, I just hope I have enough bottles left in the cellar.

(Chateau de Beaucastel Châteauneuf du Pape) This wine has a dense and youthful hue, with a very dark core, and a youthful red rim. The nose has a good complexity, and is quite feral and savage, alongside notes of meaty, cherry fruit. The palate is rich, full and deep, with a dense and grippy character, more so than I would have expected taking into account this is regarded as one of the fresher of recent vintages. There is plenty of texture and substance, and a firm acidity to balance it out. This is quite fine.

(Chateau de Beaucastel Châteauneuf du Pape) From a half bottle. The colour here is a little less dense and impressive than the preceding wine. It looks a little more youthful though. There is plenty of Mourvèdre character on the nose, with a sweet cured meat note alongside dense, macerated fruit. Fabulous! There is concentration on the palate, but immediately apparent elegance as well. Macerated Mourvèdre fruit, beautifully balanced, and a very fluid, feather-light glide across the palate. Real finesse here. Brilliant. Needs four or five years.
