March 10, 2012 - La Mission Haut Brion; 3/9/2012-3/10/2012 (Burg Staufeneck): This was not heavy, even thin, but very pleasant. Slightly green nose, but sweet on the palate.

March 9, 2012 - Some bricking on the edges with a cloudy garnet coloration. Nose opens with a smokey, leather lead pencil bouquet. Nose quickly develops to include smokey red fruits and black currents. Decided not to decant due to its age. Comes into the mouth with an elegant smooth flavor of lite red berries, the mildest hint of tobacco, oak and ceder. Much lighter than a typical vintage of this great wine due 1987 not being a stellar year. Glad I opened it, because it only would have gone downhill. Score would have been higher if I drank it earlier.

July 15, 2009 - Mid Jul 2009 at “Buffalo” Steakhouse: rubin red color; intense aromas/flavors of cassis, cherry and blackberry, plus coffee and chocolate; light/medium body; round texture.

Excellent classic, mature Claret from a mediocre vintage.

April 3, 1999 - Reviewing my old wine critiques - pre CT - and though I would add this review given how much I loved this wine way back when. Critique added for historical purposes only. No rating provided back then.

"The wine was purchased at La Point de Latour’s wine store in London during the summer of 1993. The cost was around sixty pounds. The ullage was around one –half inch. The wine was decanted, though there was very little sediment. The color, as viewed through the neck of the bottle, seemed a bit light; however, the color in the glass was quite good. The wine’s color revealed some age, but by no means appeared over-the-hill. The edge of the wine was a lighter brick red and the center was a lovely mature garnet color. The nose was subtle and quite approachable. Flavors in the nose and on the palate were very consistent. One smelled and tasted rich flavors of cherry, cassis and various berries. A touch of anise was also noted along with cedar and warm cherry elements. This is a lovely wine, produced from an all but forgotten vintage. This wine has a few more years of life to it and might be wonderful to drink in five years’ time. Like Chateau Haut Brion, of the same vintage, this wine is very nice. The moral of the story is to consider purchasing this chateau in overlooked vintages from chateaux such as La Mission Haut Brion or Haut Brion. Additionally, one should consider purchasing such wines in magnum format as the wine has held-up so nicely."

June 19, 1993 - A pleasant surprise. Drank with Alex Matro and Easley Blackwood.
