    July 21, 2018 - Another lovely showing. Drank over two nights. Dark and ripe, with fragrant red cherry and plum fruit. Not overly persistent on the nose
    Palate is pretty structured and firm. Juicy currant and plum fruit, more black than red. Fine tannins, still juicy acidity and a long finish. Some leather, some tar, but lacks complexity for a higher score. That said, this did not seem on any danger of dying soon, this note was from day 2. Lovely wine and drinking great now.

    (VALDICAVA Rosso) 2007 Valdicava Take #3 Dear Friends, We've offered this wine 2-3 times over the last year and the demand seems to be gaining (instead of waning) - people keep asking for it so here you go... The fact remains, this wine is superior to many highly scored examples of Brunello di Montalcino and it's half the price: (the original offer from last winter is below - due to favorable exchange, I will honor the same retail price as the first two parcels) This wine is set to arrive with perfect provenance in approximately one week: 2007 Valdicava Rosso di Montalcino Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Italy5827 ****************************** (original offer from last winter, Jan/2009) 2004 Brunello (2007 Rosso) Dear Friends, ...of the many surprises I sampled (during my 2004 Brunello review), a standout emerged that was not even a Brunello (or was it?) - Valdicava's 2007 Rosso di Montalcino. This 2007 Rosso showed a swagger that was a junior version of its more famous Brunello sibling and (my guess) is that it will be horded by those seeking alternatives to everything from Chianti Classico Riserva to Brunello itself. At this price, it has to be one of the finest bargain wines of the region (if a $26 wine is a bargain?). It's become apparent that Valdicava is spending more and more time on this wine as the Brunello and Riserva become out of reach for most consumers (from a pricing standpoint) - they want to capture the entire drinking audience and I commend them for producing one on the finest Rosso's now available. While I yearn for the days when Rosso was $12-15, I still believe this wine provides similar quality to many regular Brunello wines on the market and it shows a complexity in its mammoth yet still accessible style that many will yearn for (which makes the price very competitive). In addition, Valdicava's Rosso has become something of a rarity itself as very little comes to the US - I wouldn't be surprised if a collectable market arises for this wine independent of the Brunello.     (Rosso di Montalcino VALDICAVA) 2007 Valdicava Rosso Dear Friends, The power of the internet never ceases to amaze me - Antonio Galloni came out with his pre-release comments on this wine a few days ago and the entire market was sent topsy-turvy. A wine that few cared about last week is now being traded for 30-50% above its initial release cost in Dec 2008 - I would expect $40-45+ prices on this wine sooner rather than later. Instead of replying individually to each email request I received over the weekend regarding the 2007 Rosso, I will surmise our position as the following: we will honor our original offer price on this wine simply due to the fact that I purchased everything I was allowed back in Dec and the second half of that purchase is about to land - when this original parcel runs out, we will not be able to honor the same price (if I purchased today, our retail price would be in the high $30's and that's still pre-review - by the end of the week, post-review, it will probably be more). If we run out at the $26+ price, look for other merchants that purchased the wine on release - there is still stock in the US around $28.99-29.99 but it will certainly disappear quickly: Antonio Galloni from a few days ago (6/27/09): "Tasted the 2007 Rosso di Montalcino from Valdicava again today. With that... 2007 Valdicava Rosso di Montalcino Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Italy8833 ****************************** (original offer from last winter, Jan/2009) 2004 Brunello Dear Friends, I've just completed an extensive and challenging round of tasting the top 2004 Brunello wines (from bottle) and there is much to get (cautiously) excited about. I'm not ready to say the vintage is going to yield better results than 1983 Soldera but it does have many shining stars. In general, I found less opulence than 2001 with similar alcohol levels (13.5-14.5%) and slightly more Bordelaise breed. The tannins are fine, intense and ripe but the weight of the best wines leaves a Left Bank-like quality that will make this vintage a favorite of many that found 1997 and 2001 just too much. If you've enjoyed the deep, serious nature of 2004 in the coastal environs of Italy (Bolgheri, Castagneto Carducci, Suvereto, etc) this is the Brunello vintage for you - think 2004 Ornellaia made from Sangiovese Grosso and you will be close to the style of the top contenders. In other words, this is a potentially serious year with many ageing candidates but it does not possess the sheer glycerol ripeness of recent "vintage of the century" candidates which makes it (strangely) unique and more traditional in scope. For my palate, this style is preferred. If you are a classicist, this is the vintage for you but most of the wines are not pleasing to drink today - they will require bottle age like a great traditional vintage of Bordeaux - 1975 and 1986 come to mind. This is not the type of vintage that will show well in a large walk-around tasting unless the wines were decanted for at least 24 hours or more - even still, with decanting, many tasters will be left scratching their heads with a thick coating of rough tannins and puckering, closed Sangiovese Grosso coating their palates - very close scrutiny is required to quantify this vintage - a small sip in 30 seconds will not garner a proper impression and many incorrect assessments will be formed. I had to taste many wines over a three-day period to extract the nuance and true character of each. In more than a few cases, bottles that were near the bottom of my initial tasting rose to the very top after 24-48 hours of air and vice-versa. Keep this in mind when reading critical reviews of the vintage - be sure the notes include decant times or multiple tastings to form an opinion. I honestly believe this will be a vintage where many quasi 88-90pt wines rise to great heights once they have time in the cellar. In addition, I've found bottles shipped to the US to be far more closed than bottles of the same wine tasted in Italy. In some way, a vintage like this makes me smile as not every wine should be immediately accessible and "yummy" upon release - there is still a world out there that wishes to cellar wine to bring out its complexity and 2004 Brunello fits that camp. Of course there are exceptions - certain wines in my tasting are drinking well already but will also keep for the long-term (2004 Valdicava comes to mind - a harbinger of a wine that has a chance to elicit off-the-wall critical praise).
