October 30, 2023 - OMG I don't even know what to make of these reviews! Less than a year ago, in Jan 2023, BURGINNER gave this wine 85 pts and wrote "Very green. Underripe". In Jan 2011 JASONH wrote "it was outstanding". In Feb 2009, ELAMASTERS scored this 94 pts and wrote "fresh and young". Waaaay back in 1989 MickleThePickle gave this 71 pts: a truly terrible score! I don't even know how this score came to be published on this website. Did the internet even exist in 1989?!

I've literally never had a wine that is so all-over-the-board. And the weird thing is; I kind of understand all of the perspectives.

Yes, the wine is green and underripe; there's a part of it that tastes like green bell pepper juice mixed with cut grass. On the other hand, this is a wonderfully mature (41 yr old!) Cabernet Sauvignon that is full of dark red and black fruits, blackberry, mulberry, black cherry, dark earthy leathery notes that taste like they are coming from the inky depths of the Mariana Trench, that is somehow also light in body with tannins that have the texture of 2000 grit sandpaper. Incredibly complex. Looong on the finish. A complete wine that is fascinating. Is it possible that I agree with both the 71 pt rating and 94 pt rating at the same time? Answer:yes.

January 1, 2011 - I know I drank this with a few folks this year and it was outstanding. Too bad I didn't write a note but I guess "loved it" will do.

February 21, 2009 - Incredible. Vibrant ruby color. Scents of roses, cranberries, and white pepper. Tastes surprisingly fresh and young, with notes of raspberry and a lovely minerality. Great acidity along with silky, resolved tannins gives a gorgeous mouthfeel that dances on the tongue. Extremely seductive. This bottle (purchased through K&L last year) was in incredible form and pristine for a wine 26 years old (fill level was above the base of the neck). I doubt it would have improved more with any further age, but it did not seem to be in any danger of declining soon and I would not be afraid to hold onto one for several more years.

April 26, 1989 - At home trying out my new INAO tasting glasses. Dark ruby-purple color; majestic appearance, very alive and vibrant. Nose is concentrated with highly extracted blackcurrant fruit scents. Nose promises a lot; bespeaks a very young wine. Very attractive. On the palate, quite a surprise. Very oaky, lacking fruit. Somewhat hollow. Picks up a little fruit in latter part but still finishes short, with a curious metallic tang and some nasty tannic bitterness in the end. Altogether a relatively simple wine that wants more stuffing. Where's the fruit??? K thought it was dirty and earthy. Nose lost a lot in a short time. 5-9-5-2: 71/100.
