November 28, 2021 - decanted and poured about an hour later. Nice balance, something of a nose, perhaps not as much complexity as I hoped the years would bring

May 19, 2021 - decanted 30 min. completely ready to go & a very good napa valley floor representation; an above average cab at its price point since its youth. deep & juicy, blackcurrant & weedy, tannins resolved.

may not ever attain particular complexity, or elevated personality, but still a good drink

prime burger 'holstein'; garlicky escarole w/lemon & dijon

March 25, 2021 - I thought this was a fabulous bottle of Larkmead after decanting it for an hour. It's still bright and fresh and has a terrific bouquet. Ready for prime time!

February 24, 2021 - Decanted for sediment. Dark crimson color. Great nose out of the gate with cocoa dusted black fruits, cassis, hints of purple florals, a bit of toasty oak and vanilla. Similar flavors on the palate with a good amount of fresh blackberry and cassis and some creamy oak notes. Silky mouthfeel with medium+ acid and integrated tannins. Long finish. This is drinking great right now. Surprised there wasn't more development at this point but the pure fruit is really delicious and the tannins have softened nicely. Lovely cabernet.

December 3, 2020 - This rich Cabernet has gained more secondary flavors (particularly, olive and gravel) that suggest its future is more savory in nature. Garnet in color; medium in body; somewhat muted aromas of blueberry peel and gravel. Flavors of blackberry, graphite, tapenade, and ribeye, with an integrated and lingering finish. Blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot, and 1% Cabernet Franc. 14.5% alcohol.

A wine in transition, this should be opened in the next few years if you want the fruit, but it has the balance to offer a more unrepentant Old World profile in 2022 or later. (The original release note said it could be opened until 2020, but I think this will last longer.) I'd like some more freshness, but it's a solid and tasty wine.

December 1, 2020 - Drink 'em if you got 'em! This wine is so beautiful right now, all patience is fully rewarded. Lots of fruit, a bit of earth and savory, so enjoyable. Tannins are smooth and integrated, such a enjoyable treat. This wine stood all on its own before dinner and it was so enjoyable. Top 5 Napa estates, still somehow under the radar.

November 22, 2020 - Patience rewarded here - while I very much enjoyed this wine years ago (my last bottle opened was 6+ years prior) it's for different reasons now. The fruit no longer dominates; instead it's part of a well-balanced interplay where menthol, forest floor, and coffee creep in. While this may likely develop further, this stage of development seems proper for this wine, making for a choice that kept the geek (me) happy but also the family as well. Paired with french onion topped short ribs.

November 16, 2020 - Lots of cherry and some earthy (mushroom) tones. Disagree with most and believe it's at (or a little beyond) its' peak now. Fruit fading a bit but structure still strong and a nice long finish (even picked up a little spice).

Edit: Some left on day 2 and I would now score the the wine 94. My previous comments about fading fruit were way off. I now believe it just needs a couple more years in the cellar or a longer decant. My bad.

September 8, 2020 - decanted 30 min, consumed over 2+ hours. Napa cab is rare in my drinking queue of late, but this is a fine expression without the exaggerated & overdone characteristics of the fancy ones; full-fruited without jammy qualities, stylish nose & suave oak expression, just a pleasure to enjoy in the context of late summer supper from the grill. mature, but sustainable for several years.

grilled bone-in ribeye w/roquefort butter; grilled okra w/lemon aioli; heirloom tomato & arugula salad w/grilled corn
