  (SAINT SIFFREIN CdP) 2007 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Magnum Dear Friends, I was hoping to save this until just before the holidays (as a last hurrah, 2009 send-off of sorts) but recent reviews and subsequent allocation pressures dictate a Tuesday morning in November instead. If the 750mls of this wine were the steal of the vintage in 2007 Chëteauneuf-du-Pape, what does that make this? Large format wines from "the greatest vintage in history" with the highest rating/value crown of an entire appellation have only one place to go - away, quickly...and up (in price that is). There is something about the 2007 Saint Siffrein that has captured the fancy of a world audience and the 750mls of this wine are basically gone from the global market already. I cannot say that about any other wine from Parker's review - even the 100pt wines are still available on the open market. With that as a pre-curser, I gingerly segue to this... In general, magnums are tougher to obtain than 750s and the regular bottles of 2007 Saint-Siffrein were rare enough. To make matters even more interesting, Cyril Chastan (the owner of Saint-Siffrein) decided not to bottle any 3.0s of 2007 so the magnums are the only large format that will exist. He also bottles all of the magnums by hand - that takes time and it leads to fewer bottles (it takes too much effort). I probably don't need to go much further with this - I think you know where I'm headed. If you are looking for an investment or just a brilliant wine to drink at an important occasion 10-20 years down the road, you would be hard-pressed to find a better deal on a traditional large format Chateauneuf-du-Pape of significance. The 2007 in magnum is about the lowest priced birth-year investment you can make for an example that is nearly guaranteed to last for decades. As previously mentioned (ad finitum), the critical reviews and scarcity will follow this wine well into adulthood - even more so as corks are pulled and 2007 stocks begin to dwindle. In addition, I'm trying to get Cyril to personally sign each of the magnums - for authentication down the road and to keep this parcel special and separate from any other: VERY RARE - NO MAGNUMS OF THE 2007 HAVE BEEN SOLD IN EUROPE OR THE US - this lot is being hand-bottled expressly for you - that's as precious as it gets in high-end 2007 Chateauneuf-du-Pape. 2007 Saint-Siffrein Chëteauneuf-du-Pape 1.5lt Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Rhone8252

  (SAINT SIFFREIN Chateauneuf du Pape) 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Dear Friends, Well, well, well. Our friends at Saint-Siffrein just pulled of the heist of the year in the Southern Rhone. Not only was their 2007 the highest rated/lowest priced Chateauneuf-du-Pape in the entire Parker review but the chatter around France right now has their stock on one of the fastest TGV rides I can remember. All it takes is one magic review and the wine-world is now banging down Saint-Siffrein's door. They are coming from everywhere (Japan, Russia, Brazil, etc) and Cyril Chastan, the owner, has locked himself in the cellar - the fax machine is out of paper at this point. The bottom line is you will be hard pressed to do better than this from any producer in the entire appellation - everyone in the retail and restaurant world knows it and consumers are always quick to pick up the trail of the next big thing. I've discussed auction values quite a bit lately and this wine is almost certain to increase in value - a lot. Not only is it very difficult to procure (Pierre Usseglio or Clos des Papes this isn't) but the scant current price makes it a candidate down the line for a very healthy increase. The WA review will follow this wine for the next two decades and the relatively elusive nature of the producer will give few collectors the chance to try or purchase the wine - you simply cannot find the 2007 Saint-Siffrein on the open market and what was available last week is now gone. All of this adds up to scarcity as the years click away - supply and demand will run its course. Now, for those of you that are actually going to drink this wine, in my vertical tasting of Saint-Siffrein (noted a few months ago), this wine came in third - which ultimately shows you how good the 2005 and 2006 are. It was apparent to me that the 2007 had the most compact potential of any of the wines but it was not a wine for today (which is what I said in my review). If you are buying for future consumption or for a 21st birthday, the Saint-Siffrein receives the price/value/ageing award for 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape. It is one of the finest traditional wines of the vintage and it is priced like many of the 1995s were on release - enough said: I think it's safe to say this wine is not going to be around very long. While I should probably save this offer for a holiday special in December, we've received so many 2007 CdP inquiries that I'm inclined to hit the send button on this and run for cover. Here goes.. 2007 Domaine de Saint-Siffrein Chateauneuf du Pape (If we are sold out when you reply and you consider a grey market source, be very careful - normally I would recommend other retailers but after speaking with Cyril this morning, there is very little chance they will actually get the wine - especially if it is being offered on pre-arrival.
