March 1, 2024 - Slightly charred stems. Palate quite tart, touch harsh. (2001/16844)

January 5, 2024 - [Blind] Teas, spice, developed / maturing fruit, very beautiful nose. Good fruit and lots of acid to the palate. I would say distinctively older DRC given the stems and greenness. Lovely spice, integrated and soft palate. Quite baffled when this was revealed, I was thinking at least 1990s. Nothing at all like a 2007 Richebourg a few months ago. Curious showing, certainly accessible and drinkable now. Shockingly light and resolved... 93 - 94.

March 31, 2023 - After years of hearing about the hype of this famed bottle, I finally had my own experience to consider for myself the meaning of La Tache thanks to the largesse of a generous host. It’s hard for me to do this experience justice but I will dispense with the typical systematic tasting note because it’s just too sterile and frankly beside the point. Instead I will relate some impressions that still remain with me after the experience.
My initial reaction was one of surprise- and not really positive. Popped and poured, the nose evoked a standard set of potpourri red berry fruit, earth, and mushroom. The palate was restrained and thin with little purchase to consider. Is this it? Is this what I’ve been waiting for? I tried hiding my disappointment.
And then, as if on cue, the magic began to happen. Almost as if you could see it, and be a part of it, the wine began a metamorphosis. The nose undertook mint, spearmint, moss, vegetable stem, lambs ear. The mushrooms developed a truffle like perfume and the potpourri re-organized into parts greater than the sum. Huh. Is this wine?
The palate, still lithe and restrained, formed pleated layers of depth all the while retaining a feather-like body. Whoa. Is this possible??
This wine did not stop evolving, at times so momentously that I think something was moving inside of it. Fairies just out of view? Deep down the rabbit hole now I was actually beginning to consider how I might dip my face in this ambrosia when the waiter ultimately snapped me from my reverie to present us an empty bottle. “All finished,” he placed the empty vessel of memory on the table for us to contemplate in silence. I am still contemplating.

March 3, 2023 - 01809/16844, in the 07 trio. Largest and the most powerful wine with sublime spice embedded. Very shy today but clearly with substance. 94+
