May 31, 2020 - Jour racine, la bouteille était muette, le vin complètement fermé.
November 9, 2019 - Beautifully developed Syrah: classic blood/iron orange/peel, tannins well resolved and everything in perfect balance. Outstanding; drink within the year.
July 13, 2019 - No formal notes (from memory) but this was singing, and at at its best showing yet.
March 15, 2019 - Funky, earthy nose, olives. Soft, relaxed structure, marks of blueberries, broth, olives and earth. Also iron and blood. More fun to drink tonight compared to the 2009, more giving. No hurry though, there’s plenty of fruit to keep this going and make it more interesting and complex down the road.
February 3, 2019 - Lovely to the last drop of the last bottle...
Satisfyingly complex with plum and chocolate, along with layered minerality and a pleasing acidity which maintains the freshness after all this time.
Onto other vintages!
September 21, 2018 - 6/6. Very good cork. Decanted 1/2 hr.
Medium/deep garnet core, pale garnet rim. Developed nose, dark fruit, spice, black olive, meaty notes. Medium/full bodied, black fruit, tapenade, soft tannins on mid, touch of mulch, lovely vibrant acids, savoury, meaty, medium/good length finish with perhaps a touch of graininess. VGI, fully mature.
April 12, 2018 - Looked at my three year-old notes and couldn't come up with a single thing to change. (Including the part about the price. I see that some vintages in my cellar have "appreciated" by up to $100 more than I paid for them. FWIW I'd say think thrice before you do that. These are nice wines, to be sure, but come nowhere near profound, which is what I'm looking for at triple digits.)
January 7, 2018 - Corked! What a disappointment.
April 27, 2017 - Dinner with Mark at Table, Donkey and Stick (Chicago, IL): This is a wine very much in the style of Gonon, with its light red fruit and floral nose. Alongside the VV, this is the much more red, and has a much more cheerful disposition. Perhaps not too much of a surprise, but there's no sign of 2007 torrefaction here. However, this does appear to me to be a bit softer than what I'd expect, with a bit more fruit, less acidity, and softer tannins. But give this to me blind, and I'd have no idea that this was a 2007 syrah.
March 5, 2017 - PnP at Heirloom Cafe. Pretty mid-weight with good lift. Drink now. 13%
