March 15, 2020 - Double-decanted for about 5 hours before drinking with sirloin and rib-eye. Sweet black fruit, menthol, mint and pencil shavings on the nose. Fresh and juicy on the palate with blackberry and black cherry flavours, and a touch of cedar. Tannins are fine. Medium finish. This is a nicely balanced wine, albeit still quite primary.

This was our first bottle from a 12-pack and I would say this wine is open for business. However, I won't rush to try the next bottle as I think it has a lot of time in front of it and that its development will be relatively pedestrian.

March 14, 2020 - Decanted and drank after 2 hrs on a Friday night with pasta and Italian sausage. This was the second of four bottles of the 2008. I opened the first in 2018 and it was completely closed.

Drank the second half of the bottle on the Saturday night with a tri tip and it was better. Black fruit, subtle tones of garrigue but the finish drops off.

I want this to be better but based on comments from the CT community I think I’m just going to have to wait longer. At 12 years it seems like it’s still not ready to drink (unless I use a vitamin :-)

I love Bordeaux wines and have had some awesome LB reds but I’m not sure I have the patience for a Pontet Canet or other Pauillac compared to the Margaux and St Julians on offer.

March 14, 2020 - Fine bouquet of ripe blueberries, blackberries, wood, smoke, grilled bell peppers. Full palate of ripe berries with a good amount of well integrated acidity, high quality bitter chocolate. Long finish with fine tannins, sweet and fresh. A really refreshing, succulent wine, with quite some structure and emerging complexity. Freshness is a leading element I see in the 2008 vintage, whilst still being relatively full, a classic Bordeaux vintage, still a bit early in the development curve but really great to drink already.

February 28, 2020 - Incredible nose of red fruit, dried flowers, graphite. Full bodied wine with nice balance of tart red fruit, minerality, acidity and tannins. A bit savory on the long finish. Nice now but still young and could age nicely for next 10+ years.

(Chateau Pontet-Canet (Pauillac)) An interesting aromatic layer of fruit here, very highly polished, aromatic, red-black summer fruits, almost high-toned in its definition. Certainly showing a little element of soot like a few other wines. The start on the palate is bold and reveals little, giving a firm shell of structure with little fruit, slowly relaxing and allowing the tannins out early in the midpalate. The texture of the wine struggles to manage with the level of tannin here which dominates the palate in a very forceful manner. It is certainly a wine apart within the appellation, but for me it is showing a rather over-extracted and over-worked character here, without the fruit or texture to match in this difficult vintage. That's surprising as I have tasted this twice as a barrel sample when it showed much better than this. I think caution is required here; I will leave a note of uncertainty in my score and I will reassess in the future.

(Chateau Pontet-Canet Pauillac) Lovely fruit on the nose here, blackcurrant cream with vanilla ice cream, very bright and fresh and appealing. The palate is as supple as I recall from the primeurs, with very stylish composition. And the same delightful crystalline black fruit character that marked this vintage when I first tasted it in 2009. Lovely, compact, linear, balanced and composed, giving it a very harmonious composition that puts it far closer to the 2005 vintage in structure, but obviously not substance or depth (or hype) than many people suspect,. Still, this is just a barrel sample, so we should remain circumspect, and I will assess this wine again when it is in bottle, later this year.

(Chateau Pontet-Canet Pauillac) Decanted before pouring, which is the norm for Pontet-Canet at these tastings. Dark and clearly concentrated, with a delightful perfume, harmonious and floral in character. The palate, however, is dense and withdrawn, tannic and firm. The structure is compact and tight, with a dominating wealth of ripe tannin. This has huge structure, but it is ripe, and it has the acidity to cope, and the fruit too I think. What a big finish. Massive potential here, but I hope the fruit outlives the tannins.
