September 22, 2008 - Sometimes I feel like I am living in the dark when producers like this, who are quite literally in my back yard, go by unnoticed. Mount Eden Vineyards is an icon in the Santa Cruz Mountains appellation and has been producing wine here since 1945 yet here I am having my first bottle of wine from them. I picked this up on a recommendation from my local shop and instead of going for one of the $70 or $80+ bottles from a better vintage, I went with this bottle from 2000, which was arguably a pretty bad vintage in comparison to the rest of the last 15 or 20 years in the Santa Cruz Mountains. This allowed me to spend less money on a producer I hadn't tried before and give me an idea of what their wine was like in an off vintage. If you can do good with a bad vintage then you should be able to do great things in a good year right? This wine definitely surprised me and was great right out of the bottle with bright fruit on the nose featuring currants and crushed black cherries mixed with some tobacco and a slight herbal element. The wine is very smooth and quite well structured. I could ask for a little more from the finish, which was brief, and there isn't much left in the way of tannins but for the vintage, I think this is great stuff.

December 3, 2007 - Black-purple. Nose of oak and vanilla, but no fruit. On the palate, more oak. Well balanced acidity and tannins. Shortish finish.

October 16, 2007 - Better than I expected. Just opening up at this point. Balanced, good varietal nose. Maybe a bit green still.
