October 21, 2022 - From magnum. Dark ruby. Very smooth tannins, great structure. No sign of oak poking out at all. Dark berries, some cranberry, some earthiness, beets, wood smoke. Long too. Bit of something medicinal at the edge, eucalyptus.

March 23, 2019 - As before, lots of oak and fruit, few savoury aromas. Very fruity and New World like, not really comparable to Burgundy for me. Lots of sediment left in the bottle. Still very fresh and youthful but not really sure if it will actually get better.

September 6, 2017 - Wine Tasting with HfL Executive (Fanhams Hall Hotel): The wine is clear and medium in colour - still looks youthful other than garnet tinge on the rim.
The nose is clean with pronounced intensity aromas of red fruit (wild cherries) dark fruit (plums), oak (vanilla), spice (liquorice), floral (violets), tertiary development (savoury, forest floor, leather, smoke). The wine is developing.
The palate is dry with high acidity, medium ripe tannins, medium (+) alcohol (14%), full body, pronounced intensity flavours of cherries, plums, vanilla, liquorice, forest floor, leather. The finish is long.
The quality is outstanding. Remains remarkably youthful and is showing no sign of being past its best. Still a lot of primary fruit and with the structure to allow further ageing. Sadly this was my last bottle. -

July 28, 2017 - Quite New World, oaky, fruity. Oak dominates a little. This is odd as I can see I mention Burgundy-like in previous notes.
Okay and 'big' with coq au vin however epoisses tames it a little. Oak seems more complicated now, less intense vanilla and coconut, now more wood flavours, like whiskey but still some nice cherry fruit. I also think air is helping this. Let's see how it is in another 30 minutes.
... No major difference. Mainly oak on the palate. -

December 25, 2015 - The wine is clear and light ruby in colour - still looks quite youthful.
The nose is clean with pronounced intensity aromas of red fruit (wild cherries) dark fruit (plums), oak (vanilla), spice (liquorice), floral (violets), tertiary development (savoury, forest floor, leather, toast). The wine is developing.
The palate is dry with high acidity, medium (-) soft tannins, medium (+) alcohol (14%), medium body, pronounced intensity flavours of cherries, plums, vanilla, liquorice, forest floor, leather. The finish is long.
The quality is outstanding. The wine has pronounced and complex flavours from primary, secondary and tertiary sources. The fruit is balanced by the acidity and the tannins and alcohol are well integrated. The finish is long.
The wine can be drunk now but is suitable for further ageing (at least 3 years). It has the fruit and structure to support continued development of tertiary flavours.
This is classic Pinot noir in a Burgundian style. It really is benchmark for NZ Pinot Noir. I'm going to leave my last bottle for a few years and see how it develops.
