Community Tasting Notes 103

October 5, 2019 - Quite deep fully ripe and dark cherry colour with just the earliest hint of garnet at the rim. Subdued nose at first and then comes the sappy red and black fruits, scorched earth, black currant, plum, char, new leather, camphor and black currant leaf. Just a lovely nose once it warms up a bit and gets some air! Medium full bodied. Decent weight in the mouth - perhaps a but on the thin side. Lots of ripe black currant, leather, bark and blue plum skin. Balancing acidity is en pointe. Good black currant flavour replays on the finish. Tannins are still present, even though a lot have dropped out as evidenced by the amount of sludge in the bottle. Quite dry at the end. Overall pretty nice but definitely a food wine.

July 18, 2019 - From magnum. Slow ox'ed for 30 minutes since I could not decant. But at least from magnum this would need a proper 2h decant. Tight and rather closed, tannins showing but behind all this there is a classy Bordeaux with nice balance, not overdone like their 2009, or overoaked like their 2006. Hold magnums for another 5 years. 92 (+)

June 16, 2019 - Drinking great at this stage of development. Quite smoaky - reminded me of some St. Juliens like Talbot or St. Pierre in that regard, but there is also a creaminess which I love. This is so assured and elegant. Wish I had more. 95+pts.

(Chateau Smith-Haut-Lafitte (Pessac-Léognan)) Rather concentrated fruit here, a touch high-toned, crunchy and perfumed, showing the crystalline and crisp quality of the vintage although with richness too. A solid style on the palate, highly polished, with a little silkiness hinted at from time to time but always with a strong layer of almost gamey fruit. Good pervasive fruit substance. Soft and ripe tannins, very well put together with a pile of structure that will demand cellar time. A wine of big structure and big fruit too.

(Chateau Smith-Haut-Lafitte Pessac-Léognan) Tasted twice. Smoky, slightly mineral, sweet and bright fruit on the nose here. Deep and creamy style on the palate, violet-tinged perfumed red fruit character, with moderate acidity, lots of flashy substance and a ripe grip. Overall a good, firm style.
