Community Tasting Notes 7

December 31, 2020 - Drank on NYE for my wife's 35th birthday. Cork was soaked 75% through and came out in two pieces. Decanted for sediment and served about 20 minutes later. I am a complete novice with wines of this age, so this tasting was a first for me. Tertiary notes of tobacco and leather on the nose. Not much tannin. Drank over two hours. I won't give it a score due to my inexperience with bottles like this, but it was delicious and a good showing to me what a perfectly aged old world bottle should taste like.

December 24, 2020 - Showed really well this evening. Very well integrated on pop and pour. Beautiful red and dark nose; well balanced on the palate. Tannins fully resolved. Gained weight with air. Very enjoyable.

January 31, 2020 - Wine dinner hosted by my dear friend Rainer. Wine #8 (non-blind). Tasted alongside the legendary, very structured 1990 and the ripe and broad 1998. Unbelievable how different the three wines are!

The bottle was in perfect condition. The wine was medium garnet in colour and offered red fruit, strawberry, blackberry, garrigue, spices and pebbly mineral notes on the nose and palate, with supporting acidity, mostly resolved tannin and very good length. The medium-bodied wine was smooth and incredibly balanced, with good complexity. In a great spot. My WOTN. For drinking now, I preferred it to the structured, but if I had the choice I would buy a case of both: the 1985 for drinking and the 1990 for the cellar…

July 22, 2018 - Fully mature complex classic CDP nose displaying ripe black fruit, blackberry jam, dry cherry, fruitcake, wet tobacco, leather, garrigue and earth. Excellent concentration, deeply toned slightly dry black fruit driven palate impression, good acidity, earthy mineral and a long slightly dry black fruit driven finish. It is a big scale wine that is fully mature displaying mostly tertiary notes. No need to hurry but will not improve.

February 2, 2011 - Medium dark and clear red with only slight browning and edge wateriness. Subtle but beautiful nose of mature CdP, with a haze of Burgundian (and lactic) funk that never quite dissipated after two hours in the decanter. Steadily took on weight and depth with aeration and became much better integrated than my last bottle; although not a shrill cartoon like that last sample, it's a bit meager, again reminiscent of Burg that's not ready to unfold (had any 2001 Nuits lately?). Considering the degree of bottle variation from the same source, perhaps there will be one or two really fine bottles ahead.
