    April 20, 2024 - Ouvert 8h d’avance

July 12, 2023 - Made with Obaideh (65%) and Merwah (35%) grapes sourced from ungrafted, low-yielding vineyards over 50 years of age, located at the altitude of 1,200 meters (4,000 feet) above sea level. The vintage 2007 was an uneven vintage with a sudden spring frost disturbing the growth cycle; cloudy and rainy May preventing 30% of flowering; and a three-week heat wave in August hastening the ripening process before the harvest. The wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for 9 months in a combination of new French 225-liter barriques (25%) and stainless steel tanks. 12% alcohol. This note is on a bottle that had been opened 1½ months before for a few glasses, then closed and kept in cellar temp since.

Surprisingly youthful, pale-to-medium-deep yellow-green color. The nose feels somewhat sweet-toned and a bit subdued with aromas of banana yogurt, some dull notes of sawdust, a little bit of latex, light pineapple nuances, an oxidative hint of toffee and a volatile touch of paint thinner. The wine feels rather underwhelming on the palate with a medium-to-moderately full body and light flavors of creamy oak, some ripe Golden Delicious apple tones, a little bit of sawdust, light nuances of toffee, a hint of piña colada and a touch of vague volatile character. High acidity. The finish is lively but quite subdued with a light, medium-long aftertaste of creamy oak, some sweet Golden Delicious apple tones, a little bit of woolly lanolin, light woody notes of sawdust, a hint of pineapple and a chemical touch of VA.

Surprisingly enough, the wine hadn't oxidized one little bit over the 1½ months. Well, I guess I shouldn't be surprised - Musar is known to be able to take copious amounts of aeration without any problems. However, the wine was so subdued and underwhelming that it seems obvious how 1½ months is just too much even for a Musar. The wine wasn't really off in the way of off-flavors or anything, but the wine had turned to something surprisingly closed and tasteless with air. This was an interesting experiment, showing how Musar really doesn't fall apart even when a bottle has been open for way too long, but as the wine didn't really seem to perform as a good example of 2007 white Musar should, I'm leaving this one unrated.

March 31, 2023 - On the nose volatile aromas of acetone, candies, floral notes, ripe yellow fruit. Medium bodied, dry, rather crisp, showing subtle and volatile flavors of yellow fruit, candies, hints of mineral. Delicate and elegant. Great value.

November 12, 2022 - Obaideh and Merwah. Decanted and places in wine fridge.Took a little over 2h and a little warming above cellar temp to open up. Now 3h after decant. Gold color. Aromas of lovely, gentle flowers, honeysuckle, meyer lemon, mild beeswax, and tart apples. Palate w tart apples, mild beeswax, nice minerals, flowers, a bit of lemon pith, and the barest hint of honeysuckle. Medium+ body w excellent acids. Excellent depth and concentration. Just a great seamless, balance of all the components. Evolving slowly. It's the greater balance w a bit more honeysuckle that's different than when I last had this 4 yrs ago. Really good. Can easily get to age 20 which I'm looking forward to. Went beautifully with herb and caper marinated swordfish. 93+

September 17, 2022 - Made with Obaideh (65%) and Merwah (35%) grapes sourced from ungrafted, low-yielding vineyards over 50 years of age, located at the altitude of 1,200 meters (4,000 feet) above sea level. The wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for 9 months in a combination of new French 225-liter barriques (25%) and stainless steel tanks. 12% alcohol. Tasted in a Musar Blanc 2014-1998 vertical.

Quite youthful, medium-deep greenish-yellow color. The nose feels juicy, quite lively and somewhat youthful, but also surprisingly low-key with pretty understated aromas of ripe nectarine-driven notes of stone fruits, a little bit of something waxy, light crunchy notes of fresh white peach, a sweet hint of apple jam and a woolly touch of lanolin. The wine is firm, balanced and moderately acid-driven on the palate with a medium body and somewhat understated flavors of ripe red apple, some woolly tones and subtly sawdusty notes of untoasted oak, a little bit of juicy citrus fruits, light mineral notes of stone dust and cold gun steel, a hint of fresh white peach and a touch of leesy creaminess. The moderately high acidity keeps the wine quite nicely in balance and lends it some sense of structure. The finish is savory and quite long with flavors of fresh red apple and white peach, some ripe citrus fruit notes, a little bit of leesy character, light steely mineral tones, a hint of waxy funk and a touch of wet rocks.

Just like before, this was a nice wine, but quite an underwhelming effort for a white Musar. Fortunately this was a much better effort than the dull, uninspiring bottle we had earlier this year - originally I thought the wine had just started to fall apart sooner than I anticipated, but seeing how that bottle has been an outlier from the four bottles I've had of this vintage over the past six years, it must've been just an off bottle. All in all, I think this is a wine that just needs a lot of age to show its best, but even then this is a rather low-key effort for a white Musar; tasting it between the noticeably more expressive vintages 2006 and 2009, it becomes obvious that this just isn't up to the par. There's nothing wrong with the wine and it's very possible this will turn out to be a much better wine with another decade or so in a cellar, but I have my reservations whether this wine will ever reach the level of quality found in other, better vintages. Seeing how this wine always leaves me with a somewhat lukewarm impression, I must say that for me, 2007 is an off vintage for both red and white Musar. Priced more or less according to its quality at 39,19€.

Luminous, medium-deep lemon-yellow color. Restrained, somewhat dusty and slightly sweetish nose with aromas of gummi candies, some sand dust, a little bit of paint thinner, light evolved nuances of wizened white fruits, a sweeter hint of ripe citrus fruits and a funky touch of old damp wood. The nose slowly turns sweeter as it opens up. The wine feels quite full-bodied with a bit restrained and slightly dull flavors of ripe white fruit, some woolly notes of lanolin, light dull notes of damp wood, a little bit of sea water, a hint of kombu kelp and a touch of creaminess. Despite the acidity, the mouthfeel is rather oily and concentrated. The rather long finish is light and slightly dull with flavors of ripe, sweet-toned white fruits, some waxy funk, a little bit of damp wool, light notes of wood spice and a hint of hay.

Unlike the previous bottles of this 2007 vintage I've had, this one was surprisingly dull and understated, lacking badly in freshness and fruit, instead coming across as dull. It didn't show any signs of TCA at any point, and instead of getting worse with air, the wine slowly opened up, becoming slightly sweeter and fruitier over time. Nevertheless, this bottle was definitely not on par with the wines I've tasted earlier. I wonder if the wine was served from a musty glass? Or if it was just an off bottle? Whatever the case, I know this vintage should be a lot better than this.

March 24, 2021 - Good rich golden colour. Undrinkable when first opened (a serious warning to those who ‘pop and pour’ and expect a great wine to deliver immediately).
After 3 hours, it was beginning to get closer to room temperature and to break free from its confinement. Much better as it warmed. Lemon, lemon curd on the early/mid palate with herbs and lemongrass on the later palate. The nose also opened gradually to show complex, mainly citrus, fruit aromas but with spice later.
It continued to change over 2- 3 hours more. Caramel and toffee hints developed on the mid/late palate. Again, it showed some ‘aged Semillon’ character. Hints of grapefruit acidity and pith emerged. The nose got more expressive.
This was a moving ‘conveyer belt’ of flavours and aromas - constantly changing.
Superb, once again, with pan fried Halibut.
A small sample kept for 24h was OK but not as impressive. The best drinking ‘window’ seemed to be from 3 - 8 h after opening. We have more and I will monitor this with the next bottle.
