Community Tasting Notes 22

  • sirpat007 Does not like this wine:

July 11, 2019 - Melka Estates Tasting (Napa Grill, Zurich): Big Melka Estates tasting with various wines produced by Philippe and Cherie Melka, both present at the event, including the largest Jumping Goat vertical to date. Selected notes of the winemaker comments included in the tasting story. All wines we tasted showed a European inspired handwriting (Graves, Rhone valley) especially for older vintages with later vintages (2012- 2014) coming across quite heavy on the extraction. But with most scores in the 91-94 range (few exceptions included Jumping Goat 2005 and Martinez 2015, the first vintage for the latter), the line-up struggled to meet my high expectations.

    Tasting note:
Oxidized unfortunately. Underlying fruit seems to be riper and darker than for the other vintages. NR but would be <85.

July 11, 2019 - During a vertical tasting, flight one 07-09. well managed Napa CabSav. Richer than the Mekerea but still good balance. Notes of dark fruit, spices. The 05 and 11 had the edge with their composed balance. The 07 was dead with alcoholic, oxidative notes.

January 7, 2018 - P N P and enjoyed over 2 hours at dinner in Atlanta (Aria Restaurant, must try). What impressed us was that it was smooth, complex, rich and delicious , no sweetness but just a perfect blend of aromas and flavors providing the berries, cassis, hints of espresso so characteristic of classy Napa reds-- from the beginning to the end. No change, no evolution in the glass other than a brief moment when cherries really showed then back to the description above. Just an absolute beauty, no decant needed, but careful pouring there was a little bit of sediment. Enjoy now and likely for 3 more years.

March 11, 2016 - Great wine from a great vintage. While it does not quite stand up against the perfect scores from the same year, it represents fantastic drinking at (relatively) good value.

September 24, 2015 - Decanted for about 2 hours prior to drinking. It definitely needs some time in the decanter prior to drinking as it was very tight when I first opened it. Very smooth with good balance of fruit on the mid-palate and decent finish. This wine is still very young and has many years left before peaking.
