September 29, 2021 - This dense and precise Cabernet is drinking beautifully right now, with an impressive combination of ripe fruit and savory tannin. Garnet in color and medium in body, the wine offers aromas of boysenberry, graphite, leather, and dried herbs. Integrated flavors of blackberry, eucalyptus, rosemary, and ground pepper, with a grainy and lingering finish that carries very little sweetness. Blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc. 14.1% alcohol. Fans of the Old World will enjoy this more than I did, but it's an impressive and delicious wine. 95 at the moment, with upside in another few years.

August 8, 2021 - Drank this with a 1999 Latour. Admittedly 2007 was a much better vintage in Napa than 1999 in Bordeaux, but the Latour seemed dense and clumsy in comparison. The Spottswoode has some delicate floral notes that are quite nice. Both wines were given a 2 hour decant, and both will probably continue to improve for a few more years.

July 30, 2021 - This edition needs a very long decant. Decanted 3 hours prior to meal and still closed. Rebottled and did a slow-ox decant next day for 6 hours, then poured glasses 1 hour b4 dinner.
Full bodied, complex black fruits-ripe but not sweet, bittersweet chocolate, earthy and cedar aromas. Soft tannins and well integrated alcohol. A real delight. Will wait another year or two before opening remaining bottles. 96+

July 2, 2021 - I thought I could hold off on drinking my next bottle for a few more years - I couldn’t. And I’m glad. After about 1.5 hrs of air, this was gorgeous. Stunning. I had a 95 last time. Mostly due to some stemmy pyrazines. But none detected this time and this was spectacular. Nose isn’t exactly giving, but deep black fruits and raspberries on the palate. Wet stone throughout and finishes for about 90 seconds. I get that this isn’t a multi dimensional wine (yet). Primary mostly, but oh so good.

(Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon) 3% Cabernet Franc. Inky purple, with a brick-red rim. A deep nose of blackcurrant, blueberry, cassis, smoke, earth, and a hint of violets leads to a velvety mouthfeel, balanced by distinct minerality. The firm tannins are well integrated. A dark-chocolate note emerges on the luxuriant finish. Winery Spotlight: Spottswoode Estate
