March 2, 2024 - La Paulée de Los Angeles Gala Dinner (The Fairmont - Santa Monica CA): Served at La Paulée alongside the 1985 Bonnes Mares. Both brilliant, this Beze was more powerful and meaty and nicely fresh. Kept going on and on.

February 24, 2023 - A fabulous bottle. Purchased on release and stored until today. Decanted for sediment and followed over a couple hours. Homogenous bricking. Cola and cinnamon stick lead the way with a little juicy fruit. Rhubarb and a little fig on the palate. Firm acidity but really bright and sleek at the same time. A lovely showing for this after an hour in the decanter. Bravo.

April 14, 2022 - This wine was not Clos de Beze but "Le Chambertin" - but I gave up trying to add it as a new wine. This I expect is a very small production negotiant wine. Not especially exciting. Developed red. Medium level of sous bois on the nose - present but not overwhelming. Complex fruit behind. Balanced. The structure of 1988 gives some freshness still. But it lacks the depth of fruit and texture / mouthfeel you would expect from Chambertin. Needs food. Solid effort but unlikely to stimulate much enthusiasm. The next day I thought it better - still not very textured on the palate, but complex and long, with a little austerity on the finish. A single bottle bought on release. I would decant this. Drink now.

November 15, 2021 - Fullish garnet color with slight clear rim; initially pretty blunt upon decanting (threw a lot of sediment): 3 hours later opened to show fresh, florality, rich red fruit which turns darker fruited with additional airing; sous bois, fennel, beetroot and incense; loads of spice and complexity; after an hour goes even more to “the dark side” showing soil and soupiness; shows some of the dry finish common to many ‘88s. Still an excellent wine. 93+

November 14, 2021 - This very well may be the best '88 Burg ever tasted (for me). While still quite the powerhouse in fruit and structure, this is showing Grand Cru focus and delineation of damp soil, sous bois, smoked meats, tree moss with black cherry fruit and licorice. Lots of cabinet spice development on the nose and palate with air. A big chewy yet but the tannins, while firm, do appear to be integrating with the incredible fruit. More than just firm and drying, this is actually pleasurable to drink and takes you to that next level. 94- 95 today. No rush, of course.
