April 19, 2019 - Purchased as a future and held in storage for 28 years after release in 1991. The wine showed no bricking and deep dark cherry in the glass. Along with it's totally balance palate and smooth mouth feel the Baron was quite lovely. Someone at the table thought cherry cola. I sensed the dark cherry along with some slight pony barn, leather, and tobacco. The wine needed about an hour of air in the glass and then continued to improve over a 3 hour dinner. I believe this is as fine an example of Pichon Baron as it gets, which is why I believe it deserves 100 points. The 1990 vintage is one that can yield this score. There are other 100 point wines, such as Cheval Blanc, but the only difference is the terrior because they are all now great. I believe you might be able to hold this for five years without fruit fade. However, I recommend finding the time and company to enjoy it while at it's peak and check it every couple of years if you have more than one bottle.

April 7, 2019 - Reruns - The Wine Event: As a pop and pour (or slow o'd for a couple hours) this was quite youthful. I appreciated the significant fruit alongside typical Bordeaux secondary flavors. Cassis and red fruit, tobacco, minerality and graphite.

April 4, 2019 - Reruns (Joe & Kehm's Place, Mpls): Very dark red/purple color, no bricking and a 1-2mm clear edge. PNP, drank a glass plus over 2.5 hours. There's a lovely perfume here on the nose of cassis, Christmas spice, cedarbox, and earth. This needs the glass time to fully realize itself and as it does, the fruit blossoms and takes on more of a creme de cassis character with a perfume of violets and graphite. The palate belies its age, wonderful fruit, tart, cassis, creme de cassis, and a touch of dark cherry, powerful and deep, this has a lot of graphite and crushed rock minerality now. Excellent purity, well polished tannins and a long captivating finish. A wonderful '90's Bordeaux now, this has even more show down the road. 95-96pts.

March 31, 2019 - Attended a head to head blind tasting of Pichon-Baron VS. Pichon-Lalande. Vintages were as follows for the Pichon-Baron: 1988, 1989, 1990 & 1998, Pichon-Lalande offerings were 1985, 1986, 1988 & 1996. The third blind wine happened to be the 1990 Pichon-Baron. I assume this was an off bottle which offered red candied notes, vanilla with undergrowth. This medium bodied wine was accompanied by an annoying level of high acidity which was overwhelming. Not the best 1990 PB I have had. This bottle seemed to be on a decline, so I reserve judgment on drinking window until I try another bottle.

March 16, 2019 - This drank very nicely last night. Blackberries and cassis among the various dark berry flavors. Great freshness and acidity make the wine very lively and energetic. Good secondary development and nuance.
