April 28, 2019 - A private dinner (Hotel Les Avisés (Jacques Selosse), Avize, France): Disgorged 29 October 2018, from the 2012 and 2013 vintages, 90% Avize Chardonnay and 10% Ambonnay Pinot Noir, 6000 bottles produced. I have relatively little experience with the wines from Jacques Selosse, and that may be because (or why) I sometimes have difficulty understanding the wines. Not so here - maybe because it is expressive and displays real individuality, but perhaps not as oxidative as wines released in previous years reportedly have been? Pale to medium salmon colour, with a hint of copper; the nose is expressive, with bitter orange fruit, and honeyed, vinous and woody notes, with green apple, cocoa and a whiff of fresh nuts in the background; the structured palate displays ample weight of (delicately candied) fruit and excellent density, it is tightly woven and harmonious, with concentrated flavours; very good density and length on the finish. Will probably develop very well over the next 5-10 years.

April 19, 2019 - 11th of May 2016 disgorgement. Complex aromatics of strawberry, caramel, earth, bread and stones. It is rich, full and layered. There's a core of vinous sweetness and all sorts of savoury nuance. It has great volume and length.

April 2, 2019 - Comprehensive Selosse (Chicago, IL): Disgorged July 2016. We opened a second bottle of this for dessert. I'll admit, it's not a great pairing with chocolate (but no wine is). Nonetheless, this was pretty much consistent with the apertif bottle -- the intense earthiness and red berries, with chalky intensity and tons of acid on the palate.

April 2, 2019 - Comprehensive Selosse (Chicago, IL): Disgorged July 2016. Just as I remember it. This is probably one of the best bottles of rose champagne in the market to my palate, but it's one that is incredibly stylized. Earthy, oxidative elements on the nose, almost to the point of bitterness (but not quite). It's initially not too expressive -- this is a wine that expands and becomes deeper with air. Lots and lots of acidity that is balanced by the sheer amount of extract in this wine. Concentrated, and almost tannic. Always a pleasure.

January 22, 2019 - This bottle was pure magic. The word that comes to mind is lovely. Salmon colored gold. Just outstanding.

Rockss and Fruit

(NV Jacques Selosse Rose) This really brought the funk. Um . . .Lopez Rose with bubbles? Yes . . .that type of funk. Really amazing nose but the palate was sort of a letdown. Some simple berry fruit with notes of hay and barnyard. Slightly candied. The nose was just amazing though. My least favorite wine of the night but major kudos to the aromatic complexity. I would like to try this again at some point. Probably not showing its best.

(NV Jacques Selosse Rose Brut) Very Burgundian. But red Burgundian. Nose of dried leaves, red berry fruits, intense cinnamon and lots of rocks and mineral. Very stony on the palate but has the sap and structure of a great red Burgundy. Clos de la Roche or Clos St. Denis. It had that bright profile due to its's great acidity but the fruits were of the dark red almost blue kind. Lots of grapey skin flavors on the finish. Amazingly persistent fruit. After it continued to open in tha glass the nose became much more open reminding me more of some red Morey St. Denis wine. Unique and delicious. Unlike any Champagne I have quite had.
