January 24, 2020 - A little too light bodied. No tannin structure left. It might be close to its final development.
Leather, forest berries, moist soil. Easy drinking, but will probably not develop much more.

January 10, 2020 - The 1996 GPL sports a moreish, pencil-focused nose and though it’s full of currant, saline, and olive tapenade, it’s still tight. It’s easy to like the fresh, fruity palate with its cedary présence accented by a bit of savory gourmandise and dark chocolate. Finished well. 93+

January 9, 2020 - Very similar to DJ Hammond's note. Though I don't feel any particular need to rush my remaining bottles. Old school claret and very satisfying. Could possibly argue for a higher score.

January 9, 2020 - Fully mature, this is at its peak, and only needs an hour in the decanter. Some left bank 1996s have shut down recently, but this is not one of them. It is a classic example of old school Bordeaux, and could be mistaken for a wine a decade older. Blackcurrant, leather, and earth dominate the nose and palate with good balance and depth with a finish 30 seconds plus. The tannin although resolved, is over sharp and bitter particularly on the finish, and prevents the wine being one of the great Grand Puy Lacostes. As stated previously, I could not guarantee the longevity of the wine and will keep a watching brief on its lifespan.

December 31, 2019 - Deep dark blue fruit with power and the finesse that time in the bottle brings to Bordeaux. very well integrated and drinking great. Decanted for 2 hours but perhaps would have benefited from a 5-8 hour decant. Lovely wine. All the right elements are represented but the harmony slightly off hence the 93 versus a 94-95. Beautiful wine.

(Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste) Very dark red violet color; herbal, green herb, a little murky on nose; tart black fruit, camphor, herbaceous, lead pencil palate; medium-plus finish 91+ pts.

(Grand Puy Lacoste) do not like where the '96's are going. Good nose with lead pencil, cassis, smoke and some leather but palate was uninspiring. Lowish acidity, burnt notes, flat fruit, some decent concentration and that's it. Yawn. Other '96's I have had at this quality level seem to be mellowing out and turning into C-Span wines. They make me go to sleep.
