September 11, 2021 - Decanted for an hour which was plenty. Subdued nose of pencil lead, cassis and cedar. The wine drank well with a medium-bodied, mildly austere palate presence. It exhibited mostly secondary characteristics with a cedar tinged finish. While unlikely to see further upside, I expect this will continue to hold for a number of years. Very enjoyable with charcuterie.

August 7, 2021 - Had with grilled ribeye while watching Pursuit of Love. Excellent pairing. Nothing extraordinary, but still holding its own. Dense color, red fruits, leather. Needed better decanting than I gave it.

July 4, 2021 - Nice wine. Still fruity, with smoky and a bit vanilla. A stable claret. Drink now.

April 23, 2021 - Not great, but quite nice. Low alcohol, high acid. Pronounced notes of cassis on opening. Some cigar box, even menthol later. Ate with skirt steak.

It's easy to rubbish just any Bordeaux in comparison with its more refined siblings. But for a minute just appreciate the personality, longevity, and voice of a wine such as this.

April 2, 2021 - Seemingly a divisive wine, the 1996 Clos du Marquis does start out a touch meager, especially when compared with its senior sibling in this vintage; but it fleshes out with a decant considerably, offering up aromas of cassis, loamy soil, cigar wrapper and pencil shavings, followed by a medium-bodied, fleshy palate with an ample if somewhat open-knit core that's girdled by chalky tannins and lively acids.

(Clos du Marquis) Dark garnet color; intriguing savory black fruit and beefy nose; structured tart red fruit, cherry palate with menthol notes and depth, noticeable Petit Verdot; medium-plus finish 92+ pts. (65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot)

(Clos du Marquis) Classic nose of cedar, red currants, tar, mint and earth. Aromatic and perfumey. Waves of currant and cherry with ripe, chewy tannins and nice acidity that keeps the fruit flowing on the finish. Very pure and with utmost elegance. Drinking well now but go 8-15 years more. A beauty.
