Community Tasting Notes 3

    October 27, 2018 - 14,5% alcohol.

Surprisingly developed and quite translucent mahogany color with a dull yellow rim. Very developed and oxidative nose with aromas of meat consommé, some wizened red fruits, a little bit of savory old wood and a hint of raisin that only grows in intensity as the wine opens in the glass. The wine is smooth, medium-bodied and quite tannic on the palate with quite tired flavors of raisins, wizened red plums, some soy sauce, a little bit of peppery oak spice, light bitter notes of sanguine iron and a touch of tart cranberry. The wine feels rather structured with its high acidity and rather grippy tannins. The finish is tightly-knit, tannic and very tertiary with long and somewhat oxidative flavors of peppery spice, some raisiny tones, a little bit of sour cherry bitterness and a hint of meaty umami.

A premoxed bottle - contrasting this wine to the one I had a few years ago, this is like from another planet. The wine I had in 2015 was tough yet still surprisingly youthful and only slowly approaching its drinking window - as one would expect of a 2006 Nebbiolo - whereas this wine was obviously quite oxidative and noticeably past its peak. A big disappointment. Waste of money at 39,90€.

September 9, 2015 - A single vineyard Barbaresco from the Vigna Santo Stefano located in the Albesani vineyard, Neive.

Quite translucent and moderately deep pomegranate color. Very complex and attractive nose that's open for business from the get-go: savory and somewhat developed aromas of dark plummy fruit, wizened cherries, smoke and tar, some hot sun-bkaed gravelly earth, a little bit of dried figgy fruit and a floral touch of dried roses. Very classical Nebbiolo nose with a lot of depth and intensity. The wine is dry, rich and medium-to-moderately full-bodied on the palate with very intense and somewhat developed flavors of tar, slightly dried figs, some plummy fruit, a little bit of allspice, a floral hint of dried flowers and a touch of sour cherry bitterness. The wine is very structured with high acidity and tough, unyielding tannins, but the wine shows also some softness and resolution brought by age with enough ripe fruit to balance out the tightly-knit structure. The finish is tough and tannic yet still gentle and nuanced with intense flavors of sour cherry bitterness, ripe blackberries, some tar, a little bit of smoky earth, a hint of pipe tobacco and a touch of exotic spices.

A beautiful, remarkably intense and impressively structured Barbaresco that is starting to hit its drinking window in the sense that it is actually approachable and not just tough as a leather boot with all the flavors subdued under the structure. Now the wine actually exhibits lots of depth, ranging from vibrant, cherry-driven primary fruit to more developed dried fig flavors, but is still very tightly-structured and sinewy. Most likely this wine will keep improving for the next 10-15 years and keep for a further decade or two. Beautiful stuff, highly recommended. Good value at 41,90€.
