July 27, 2022 - Good bouquet, sweet dark fruit and menthol. More late 90s than 78 on the palate. Palate is deep and dense. This can easily age 20 more years. Wish I have more bottles.

May 12, 2020 - Dick Graff was the legendary proprietor and winemaker that guided Chalone Vineyard through its golden era of Cali winemaking. He was a pioneer known to be one of the first persons to import and sell Burgundy barrels and introduce Burgundian winemaking techniques in the United States.

Chalone is the one and only vineyard in the Chalone appellation. That’s right, Chalone is it’s own AVA! It’s sense of place conveyed through wine can be attributed to its volcanic limestone and graphite soils and unique microclimate.

The distinctive bouquet and flavor of the 1978 Chalone Pinot Noir is an undeniable and intended result of its terroir. Deep red in color, the wine expresses a knockout perfume of exotic spices, herbal and earthy tones with a distinguishable scent of evergreen. It unmistakably manifests the essence of Christmas.

This bottle of ‘78 Chalone PN is absolutely breathtaking and full of life. Powerful, deep and complex, this Old Cali Pinot is ripe with sweet dark red berry fruit, polished tannins and perfectly balanced, bright acidity. This is simply all of nature’s seductive beauty transformed into liquid divinity.

An amazing aged Cali Pinot that makes me question “Why pay the exorbitant prices for Burgundy Grand Cru?”

July 12, 2019 - Menthol, earth and sweet dark fruit. Very burgundian with good complexity. It was a fun side by side against 76 dujac clos st denis. 92+

December 12, 2018 - This was a pleasant surprise. Drinking surprisingly well today. Tart with cherries and bright and interesting. Good age but still going strong. Well done wine.

(Chalone Vineyard Pinot Noir Chalone) Dark bricking red color with pale yellow meniscus; earthy, mature, black cherry and sage gravy nose; tangy, tart, high acid, earthy, herbal, berry palate; medium-plus finish (Allen Meadows described it as the most technically perfect, with balanced acidity and tannins, but not the most enjoyable of the flight)
