  January 21, 2022 - Long blind wine tasting dinner. Short notes from memory. Same bottle as Collector. This was my own bottle, and I was curious to see how this would show as I have always struggled to find the peak drinking window for Terra di Lavoro. Opened in the morning and put cork back in, so very gentle 12 hour slow ox.
  Everybody had this as a mature Bordeaux, and nobody could believe that it was not even a Bordeaux blend. Mature and slightly cloudy color. Fairly muted nose. This was pleasant and unlike younger vintages of Terra do Lavoro, easy drinking with a round palate with plenty of secondary/tertiary notes but without being oxidative, integrated tannins, short to medium finish. I thought it was overall a bit disappointing as the wine did not show any of incredible aromatics, particularly on the nose, that younger vintages of this wine show.
  In my eyes, nowhere near the lofty ratings this vintage got from the major critics (Tanzer 97, Galloni 96, Parker 96). For me this seemed somewhat past peak, at the same time I see that Antonio rated it 96 in 2010 but indicated a drinking window of 2014-2029.
  Have one more bottle of the 99 and will filter the wine as the cloudiness and mediocre aromatics could have been affected by fine sediment. Anyway, my quest to find Terra di Lavoro's drinking window continues...

  January 21, 2022 - During a blind tasting dinner. Everyone was guessing left Bank Bordeaux of the 90ies or the 80ies. The wine was well structured, a bit rustic, good aromatics around wet forest floor with a CabFranc like pyrazine streak at the finish.

  February 3, 2020 - A blend of Aglianico (80%) and Piedirosso (20%) from vineyards averaging 5 years. Macerated with the skins for 20 days in stainless steel. Aged for 12 months in new Alliers and Nevers oak barriques. 13% alcohol, 5,1 g/l acidity and pH 3,7. Total production 5,000 bottles. Tasted in a Terra di Lavoro 2011-1997 vertical.
  
  Moderately translucent and slightly hazy raspberry red with a developed brick-orange hue and a pale rim. Developed, savory nose with aromas of gamey meat, leather, cherry marmalade, some herbaceous notes of bell pepper, light smoky notes of gunpowder, a little bit of rustic barnyard and autumnal leaves, oxidative hints of beef jerky and a lifted touch of balsamic VA. The wine is ripe, full-bodied and quite savory on the palate with dry flavors of gamey meat, wizened cranberries, some sanguine notes of iron and bloody meat, light leathery tones, a little bit of sour cherry bitterness, a hint of dried dates and a fresh touch of brambly black raspberry. The wine is somewhat high in acidity with gentle, fully resolved tannins that contribute to the chewy texture, but otherwise feel very smooth and silky. The finish is dry, long and developed with savory flavors of leather, dried red cherries, some sanguine tones, a little bit of raspberry jam, light pruney tones, a hint of earth and a touch of stony minerality.
  
  A beautifully developed, complex and savory vintage of Terra di Lavoro that felt remarkably similar to the vintage 2000 that was tasted alongside this wine - only this one felt slightly less ripe and thus slightly drier in taste. All in all, this is in a great phase right now, smack in the middle of its drinking window. Seeing how the wine is getting somewhat tertiary, I doubt this will benefit from any further aging. Drink now or soon. Recommended.

  May 19, 2016 - No formal notes as this was consumed at a restaurant some months ago. This wine was a hit though, and hugely enjoyable. The aromas smelled like fresh volcanic black rock. Like walking through and old eruption. This was coupled with tons of vibrant blue fruit that was incredibly decadent. Luscious, silky palate texture. These notes carried throughout the wine and and into the finish which was still plentiful of tannins and acid. Really great integration at current and it was certainly enjoyable today, but I don't think it's yet at its apogee. The fruit is still plentiful so I think it can continue to evolve as more of the structure resolves. I would say that the wine certainly did show some of its alcohol which was the only detracting quality of the wine.

  May 5, 2013 - Deep garnet color a bit hazy.
  Intense and complex nose, 'lifted' in a sense, of minerals like graphite, rusty iron, ash and asphalt
  which remind one the volcanic soils on which the grapes for this wine were grown. Also sleek leathery notes
  and cassis fruit. Shows development but has potential for further evolution. As time passed aromas on the nose
  became more and more Pauillac-like, revealing more cedar and pencil-shaving notes.
  On the palate it is medium bodied, fluid-textured and intense with pronounced acidity and firm tannins. Savoury and mineral flavoured,
  it is long and delicious. A complex wine with many years ahead of it. Unique in style and typical of the great Aglianico wines of Campania.
