August 29, 2019 - Last tasted 8 months ago, the wine is fully mature, and ready for consumption with minimal decanting. The nose is still rich with blackcurrant, blackberry, and cedar. On the palate I am finding that the fruit is starting to fade, but the tannin is well balanced and the wine has good depth and complexity. The finish has reasonable length and a decent balance. All it is a very elegant wine for the estate and drinking at its peak, but I will look to consume my remaining stock over the next 5 years.

August 13, 2019 - Same impressions as the last few bottles, the difference being that this time, we compared it to the 00: quite a shock. The 00 tastes unripe and clumsy next to the 01's silky, elegant fruit. However much one may enjoy the legendary greenness of SM, there are limits and the 01 is just a whole lot better.

July 14, 2019 - Cork in great shape. Still medium ruby in the glass, no bricking at the rim. Moderate barnyard on the nose. Mossy green and old leather, too. It resolves in as little as 20-30 minutes to a drinkable level. On entry, rich, well integrated dark fruit with a hint of tartness. In an hour it might be bright orange rind with a touch of iron. This has a nice line of acidity all the way through and while the tannins have resolved quite a bit they still have some grip and astringency all the way through to the end. This is one of those BDX wines that my Cali friends might like because it still displays adequate fruit, acidity and power. My BDX friends might think it's still a bit harsh and not as soft as they may like, but I find this to be a great compromise, myself. Great with a ribeye cap steak and potato skins.....even after 5 hours in the glass, still very good structure, not much drop off at all. This surely can go a while longer yet if you are inclined.

July 9, 2019 - The bottle I had might have never come to balance. fruit is fading. earthy and rustic tones are pronounced with high level of acidity and tannins sticking out.

(Sociando-Mallet) This was lovely classic Claret. Way too young but pure, ripe, and with good nervous tension due to the excellent acidity. A big mouthful of Cab/Merlot with burly tannins and finesse. A Bordeaux I did not hate. Yay.

(Chateau Sociando-Mallet Haut-Médoc) Also tasted at dinner; incredibly good quality for the vintage. Very deep colour, aromatic and young, with a claretty nose that reminds me a little of the 1997 in its youth, which was a corker for the vintage. Textured, obvious but very well judged extract, and fine tannins, fresh yet dense and quite serious. Some length too. Very good indeed.
