April 7, 2024 - Cloudy orange-ruby color with a hint of brown. Must, raspberries, some mushroom and spices with wild strawberries on the nose. Acrid raspberries on the attack with strawberries far into a delayed finish. A little flat and well past its prime but the lovely secondary red fruit notes make this wine sing.

March 30, 2024 - As the sun dips below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the rolling hills of Bordeaux, I find myself immersed in the depths of a bottle that transcends time and space - the 1975 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. To endeavor to encapsulate its essence is to embark on a sensory journey that intertwines with memories of past encounters, adventures, and the pleasures of life.

Oh, she opens at two hours and it's so beautiful and warm.

Let us first approach this enigmatic elixir through the lens of an aristocrat, one who is accustomed to the finer things in life. From the moment the cork is delicately removed, a symphony of aromas envelops the senses, unveiling layers of complexity that speak of its noble lineage. The bouquet unfolds with a flourish of ripe blackcurrants, intertwined with subtle hints of cedar, leather, and a whisper of tobacco leaf. Each inhalation is a dance of opulence, a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship that has gone into the creation of this masterpiece.

As an adventurer, I am drawn to the untamed spirit that lies within this bottle, waiting to be unleashed with each sip. Upon the palate, the wine unfurls with a grace befitting of a seasoned explorer navigating uncharted territories. Velvety tannins caress the tongue, carrying with them flavors of dark cherries, plums, and a touch of graphite that evokes visions of distant mountain peaks shrouded in mist. There is a sense of wanderlust in every drop, a longing for the unknown that beckons one to venture deeper into its depths.

For the rock musician within me, the 1975 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a symphony in a bottle, a harmonious blend of notes that reverberate with the rhythm of life itself. Each chord strikes a chord within the soul, resonating with a melody that is both hauntingly beautiful and utterly intoxicating. It is a wine that begs to be savored alongside the pulsating beat of a live performance, a celebration of hedonistic pleasures and the pursuit of passion.

I am transported back to a sultry evening spent beneath the stars, in the company of a Navajo girl whose beauty was matched only by her spirit of adventure. Together, we stole away into the foothills, where the scent of sagebrush mingled with the intoxicating aroma of grilled steak.

She, with her radiant smile and eyes that sparkled like the stars above, produced a bottle of wine as precious as any gemstone. The 1975 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, a treasure unearthed from the depths of the cellar, became the catalyst for an evening of passion and revelry. We drank deeply from its wellspring of flavors, losing ourselves in the heady embrace of its intoxicating embrace.

As the hours slipped away like grains of sand which blew across the Navajo desert, the wine began to unfurl its secrets, much like the Navajo girl who shared this moment with me. What had once been a tightly wound tapestry of flavors began to soften and bloom, revealing nuances that had previously eluded detection. It was as if the wine had taken on a life of its own, mirroring the ebb and flow of our own desires.

In the light of the rising sun, against a backdrop of rugged mountains silhouetted against the dawn, we shared a moment of perfect communion. The taste of wine lingered on her lips, mingling with the salt of her skin as we surrendered to the ecstasy of the moment and she let me….oh a memory etched into my soul, a reminder of the fleeting nature of time and the immutable power of love.

And so, as I raise my glass to toast the memory of that unforgettable evening, I am reminded once again of the transformative power of wine. The 1975 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is more than a mere libation; it is a conduit for memories, a vessel for the soul, and a testament to the enduring legacy of those who dare to embrace life's greatest pleasures. Cheers to love, to adventure, and to the timeless allure of a bottle of wine shared beneath the stars.

January 1, 2024 - This was better than the last bottle, and other than being a little reticent for the first ~30 minutes open, was really singing. Drinking wonderfully.

December 24, 2023 - Double-decanted. A bit of old bottle funk and muddled flavors upon first opening. After an hour, the fruit came out and was drinking very well. Soft but still a good bit of life left. Drink over next five years.

November 7, 2023 - Elegant nose of tobacco, wood and hints of fruit. Still lively with a couple of tannins left, could have wished for some more fruit, decent length.
