September 8, 2019 - 1997 Super Tuscans (Skokie, IL): Served double blind. Slightly stinky with a mild hint of earth. The fruit isn’t overdone here, but there’s a hint of coffee on the palate. Not holding well, this is pretty much on the verge of collapsing as well. A mild hint of soy here, but the oak is less discernible. My 4th, group's 3rd.

April 6, 2019 - A hint of bricking at the rim, cork in tight, cellar stored since release. Aroma of black powder, matcha tea, graphite, spearmint, and baked black cherries. Soft and velvety texture, nice wild red berry and pipe tobacco flavors, though a bit dilute, with a weightless midpalate and short minerally/sherry barreled finish. Drink up now, with simply grilled beef or pork, and try a hoisin based sauce, with black cherry juice and a few dried mushrooms, which will assist in bringing out the now subtle flavors left in this fading beauty.

January 30, 2019 - bottle, fill and cork all good. More earthy now, plum, black fruits and smoke. Still quite good. In general, I am not a super Tuscan fan (more interested in traditional Sangiovese wines), but this has always been an enjoyable wine over many years. Good with pasta. Probably needs to be drunk in the next few years.

December 16, 2018 - Those saying that Sangiovese do not age well should taste this wine. OK, it is clearly past it's prime, but still it accounts for fascinating drinking. Brick coloured. Somewhat muted aroma (we drank it with Elio Grasso's Baraolo Casa Ginestere 1996, so the comparison was a bit unfair), verging towards dried fruits, tobacco, tea and some coffe/caramel. Medium to full bodied, lacks fruit in the mouth and finishes quite dry, mostly towards tea and some oak (coffe/smoke). Medium length. Still, the acidity and tannins hold the wine together, making it a good companion to a rare beef. Always interesting to drink wines this old.

(Barone Ricasoli Casalferro Toscana IGT) Very dark red violet color; dried cherry, dried berry, tar nose; youthful, dried cherry, dried berry, tar, spicy plum, fig palate; medium-plus finish (needs 2 to 3 more years)

Rockss and Fruit

(Barone Ricasoli Casalferro) Great nose right out of the gates big with a mixture of incense -like aromas, spicy well-integrated oak, dark cherries, mint and a floral lift. Well developed fruit flavors of dusty dark cherry fruit and barely noticeable tannins. This was ready to go and had a nice mouthfeel and a great finish. This wine was quite explosive in it's youth and has aged well even getting some elegance.
