January 17, 2020 - Color is right, not bricking.

Early on, nose moderate and good fruit and acidity balance. Outstanding mouth feel, medium finish. Would have been 90ish.

However, in 20 minutes it went flat. Nose metallic, a flash of fruit and then nothing on the palate.

    Drink it up.

November 2, 2019 - Pulled from a 55 F degree cellar where this has resided for the last eleven years. Used an Ah-so cork puller, cork about 50% saturated when poured into a decanter. Enjoyed with orange glazed roasted duck. Youthful appearance with no signs of bricking, clear, deep ruby color. Medium plus body and medium alcohol. Aged and mature aromatics and flavors: showing rich, black rather than red fruits; complexity as evidenced by graphite, dried herbs, celery, bell pepper, dried forest floor, and chopped tobacco. Tannin is well integrated with acids still noticeable with enough staying power to support a very long, satisfying finish. If cellared properly, this can easily cellar for another 5-10 years. The “drinking window” seems short as this appears to just be entering early maturity.

August 8, 2019 - Started off ok, but never really evolved into much. Some older Bordeaux notes like cedar and cigar, but nothing overly appealing to warrant a high score. Would definitely give this a pass.

June 16, 2019 - Lovely mature Bordeaux. Notes of cassis. Leather. Nicely balanced. Long finish.

March 13, 2019 - Another wine served blind, and decanted about 3 hours prior to service...

This was a bit darker in color than the 2001 Pontet Canet is was served with, and had a darker fruit profile - more black fruit than red. That being said, it also showed developing complexity, with a rich, earthy core, and touches of spice, cedar and a little lingering touch of vanilla. It's got plenty of stuffing, and it's evolving in a nice direction. I would hold off for another 3 years or so to allow it to continue on the current aging curve. What was once borderline too modern in style for my taste, is rounding into a lovely wine, evocative of Bordeaux, and more specifically Pessac.

(Chateau Smith-Haut-Lafitte Pessac-Léognan) A good depth of colour here, vibrant, with a lovely, smoky, meaty, characterful iron-bound nose. There is some fine and vigorous fruit on the palate, which is fresh and balanced. Overall this has a nice texture and presence, and a fruit-forward, rather delicious style. This was fine with roast duck.
