August 8, 2019 - Started off ok, but never really evolved into much. Some older Bordeaux notes like cedar and cigar, but nothing overly appealing to warrant a high score. Would definitely give this a pass.

June 16, 2019 - Lovely mature Bordeaux. Notes of cassis. Leather. Nicely balanced. Long finish.

This was a bit darker in color than the 2001 Pontet Canet is was served with, and had a darker fruit profile - more black fruit than red. That being said, it also showed developing complexity, with a rich, earthy core, and touches of spice, cedar and a little lingering touch of vanilla. It's got plenty of stuffing, and it's evolving in a nice direction. I would hold off for another 3 years or so to allow it to continue on the current aging curve. What was once borderline too modern in style for my taste, is rounding into a lovely wine, evocative of Bordeaux, and more specifically Pessac.

Beau maintenant.Sera pas meilleur.

December 30, 2018 - 13% alcohol. CS 53%, M 34%, CF 13% according to Parker Jnr. The cork is not that long, but it is dense and it shows virtually no wine penetration. Decanted 90 mn ahead.
The nose is just glorious, giving out a pure expression of ripe CS, with M and (barely perceptible) oak acting as an underpinning add-on for extra comfort. The mouth is even better with fine intensity at all stages and perfect harmony; long finish supported by perfectly judged acidity. Tannins are fully resolved, but the wine is certainly not flaccid. This bottle is fully mature, but it shows no sign of fading out soon. Some of the Pessac smokiness comes through after a while in the glass.
This wine comes across to me as much less modern than the 2002, and accordingly more attuned to my palate.
One of my Bordeaux of the year without a doubt.
The only negative, and it is a minor one, is the ridiculous back label which claims, among other things, that the grapes were harvested virtually berry by berry...; do you take us for fools Mr Cathiard?

(Chateau Smith-Haut-Lafitte Pessac-Léognan) A good depth of colour here, vibrant, with a lovely, smoky, meaty, characterful iron-bound nose. There is some fine and vigorous fruit on the palate, which is fresh and balanced. Overall this has a nice texture and presence, and a fruit-forward, rather delicious style. This was fine with roast duck.
