March 6, 2020 - At 44 years old color remains a deep red with minimal ambering at rim. Fruit still very prominent, mild tannin, developing organic character. A beautiful wine

March 20, 2018 - We had the wine at Gail Danials Birthday dinner at Angele and the wine was sound and everyone loved it.

September 22, 2017 - Poured a deep violet into the glass with just about no bricking. Whaaaaat? Yep. The nose was black cassis and a little bit of graphite and some age. For a 41 year old Chappellet, should this one have been done? Probably. But dude, it's a CHAP-PEL-LET. The fruit on this wine had started to fade, but the structure was all oh so there. Surpriser of the day. No way that it was the number 1 wine given that this one was enjoyed along with a 2003 staglin, a 2003 Anderson's Conn from mag, and a 2012 Jessup among many other heavy hitters. But this one goes to show you that old Napa can compete and stay right with the new. In addition, it shows me that William Harrison is in some VERY GOOD hands with Chuck McKahn as he spent some time in the hands of this Napa royalty. Great bottle!!

August 16, 2016 - After decanting and then sitting in the glass for one hour started to really open up!

July 3, 2012 - Brought to a party and on pop and pour, this was not very good. Seal was good, cork came out intact, color was decent. But the wine was dried out, lacking in fruit and was cedary and tart. I wrote it off as being 15 years past peak.

I came back a couple hours later and some fruit had started to emerge, with some leather. About half the bottle got drunk, so I recorked it and took it home.

Came back the next night, and the wine had improved! Very nice pure black fruit, herbs, cedar, leather. Shows especially nicely with food, with smooths out the tannin and mellows the acid and lets the fruit shine. Holding up very well.
