April 7, 2019 - Deep ruby, muted nose but with some agitation gives off sweet blackcurrant and blackberry fruit and a nice desired herb, garrique characteristic. The palate is elegant and not too generous with blackberry fruit, some oak spice and cedar and tannins which are still quite firm and drying. This wine has had only 10 minutes in a decanter so I hope it will unfurl.

March 19, 2019 - Monthly Tuesday group "The Dead Sparrow" #037: Bordeaux 2003, 2004 and 2006 (By me): In the bouquet dark berries, graphite, cassis, toast and vanilla. On the palate dark berries like cassis, red berries, graphite, coffee, leather, cherries, chocolate and pleasant oak. Really beautiful wine. See also my note of last December.

February 17, 2019 - Nothing much has changed since the last bottle I tried, two years ago. This is a perfectly respectable example of Gruaud, with good body and concentration, but the fruit is not quite ripe and so it lacks a little zip in the middle section. Compared to other 04s, it's better than St.Pierre, on a par with Lagrange, but not nearly as good as Léoville-Barton. I can't see it dropping off anytime soon, but there's no reason to expect it to improve either.

December 23, 2018 - Ripe, dusty tannins, saturated cherries and plums, a hint of tobacco. Terrific long finish, poise and elegance. What a great bottle of Bordeaux. Drink now or hold through 2028.

(Chateau Gruaud-Larose St Julien) This has an attractive, mineral-stony fruit character on the nose. First impressions on the palate indicate this is a touch leaner than some wines of comparable or greater classification, but through the midpalate it shows a good and elegant style, not very dense or rich, but more of a well polished middleweight. There is a firm, tight core of grippy tannins, plenty of pepper and spice, and lots of elegant Gruaud fruit nicely held together with a complex, slightly exotic twist. Nicely balanced. Very good indeed.

(Château Gruaud Larose) Black violet red color with red meniscus; mint, dill and coffee nose, that changes to a port-like nose after 1 hour in the glass; tasty, coffee, mocha, tart plum palate with creamy texture, good acidity; medium finish 91+ pts.

(Chateau Gruaud-Larose St Julien) A firm, meaty, classically Gruaud nose with great depth of character. Firm and very tannic structure with a lovely presence on the palate; fine fruit, with a complex, meaty style. The tannins round with a flourish on the finish. This has lovely typicité. Very good indeed, with plenty of potential.

(Chateau Gruaud-Larose St Julien) An attractive, deep colour when poured in the glass. On the nose it presents slightly hot, stewed fruit, with a slightly pruney character; I find this to be teetering on the brink of an acceptable fruit profile. Quite decent style on the palate, though, amply texture with a good weight, a ripe tannic structure and really rather fine acidity. Nicely balanced, and lovely flavours here. Despite the edgy nose, which hopefully will develop with maturation, I like this. Very good. Needs 8-12 years.
