Community Tasting Notes 10

  • Alex G. Likes this wine:

March 13, 2018 - Medium dark garnet with some bricking. Tannins are soft, very approachable. Plum with a hint of cocoa. This is at peak, maybe hold for a few years. Delicious wine, a real treat.

June 15, 2017 - Farewell for now: Mint and menthol, chocolate, licorice and cherry on the nose. Good line of acidity perks up the wine against the richer styled fruit. Even with the boldness, this maintains good composure. Good length, this should improve in the short term and drink well in the medium term. It suffers a bit next to the superb 1991, though is still obviously good in its own right.

June 15, 2017 - Quick Notes From a Memorable Night in Sydney (Cirrus, Barangaroo): Mint, tobacco, leather and mocha wrapped around a core of sweet red fruit. So balanced and harmonious!

January 22, 2017 - Salil in town (Chicago, IL): Nose: Even with it having been open for a day, the nose is still expressive and deep with black cherries, violets, incense, crushed rocks, perfumes, and black raspberries.

Taste: Full bodied with medium+ acidity and medium tannins. The structure is still showing well on the second day with the tannins showing a silkiness to them. There is density and depth to the feel with black cherries, violets, crushed rocks, and black raspberries.

Overall: This was an outstanding and profound wine, and it was all on the second day. There is a reason that Wendouree is chased after like it is, and this shows why.

January 21, 2017 - Adrian's note nails it. This is indeed sui generis. There's that classic Wendouree aromatic profile right away, with layers of eucalyptus, smoke, tree bark, dark chocolate, and beneath is a core of fresh red fruit that feels remarkably light and delicate on the palate. There's some fine grained tannin on the back end here, but a lot of the structure at this point comes from the bright acidity. Phenomenal wine - Wendouree is always something special.
