March 9, 2024 - Wowser. This is a very good wine. A bit of secondary fermentation that fades away. Red fruit extravaganza. A rich wine, lots of depth but always being dominated by the red strawberry and raspberry, no mistaken how much Grenache went in to this. This is a very smooth and fresh/young wine, I don’t know if this wine will mature vs the red fruits fading away but would guess this have an easy 10 years ahead of it. Went exceptionally well with Korean bbq. Got better over 1.5 hours but would not decant, I liked the exploration as it evolved in the glass.

    February 25, 2024 - Tasted over 2 hrs
    -dark red minimal clearing
-expressive fig spicecake black olive licorice molasses vinyl sous bois
-med acidity, med/med+ weight ripe fig spicecake black olive sitting on a bed of dusty earth, a little bit of heat appears with the med/med+ chalky tannins
-great complexity, this is drinking beautifully now on its mature plateau, better than a bottle tasted just a few months ago

February 10, 2024 - ESTG does Pegau-Palooza (Seattle, WA, USA): As has been the case with many bottles of this, there is definitely some slight re-fermentation happening. The group was particularly displeased with this. That said, I have always found this to blow off. The palate is unreal, white pepper, wonderful elements of grilled plum, so sharp, spicy, intense and tannic. Day 2, all of the CO2 is long gone and what remains is intensely spicy, tannic, loaded with garrigue, plum and pepper. Just insanely pure, primary (at 15 years?!?) and intense.

February 7, 2024 - Guest somm with a work colleague for the evening - supplied wine from our cellars for a work dinner (Pro Bono, Palo Alto CA): From my cellar, first bottles of this vintage of Pegau for me...Last wine of the evening. Bottles had been decanted and rebottled 3 hours prior.

Dark and brooding garnet color. Nose showing ripe dark fruit, savory notes, garrigue. Palate of black cherry, tobacco, leather, herbs. Concentrated and rich through the mid palate. Tannins present but sweetened. Full body and long finish.

Great showing on this might, drinking younger than I would have expected. Well stored bottles should go for another 10-15 years...my #2 for the evening.

February 2, 2024 - Delicious. Left in glass for two hours before drinking. Big nose of raspberry, tar, smoke, and barnyard. In the mouth very smooth- tannins and acidity present enough to go well with pepperoni and mushroom pizza, but muted enough to make for very pleasant sippinh even without food. It seems like it’s still on the upswing but ready to go now.

Just to add as I continue to drink this…it has a very lively quality, almost fizzy (but not actually fizzy). It doesn’t have that heavy, syrupy quality that southern Rhône’s sometimes have. Also, the barnyard is quite pronounced, but interesting. It’s not off-putting. Adds character.
